The Stealer wanted to charge me that to replace the vacuum pump which is working just fine! The oil leak appears to be coming from the sending unit which I will replace ASAP! I can't believe the dealer wanted to rip me off! I feel like stopping in and talking to the GM especially after spending $7k to replace the tranny 5 mo ago ......

BTW, how the heck you got that sending unit out? Is it with a deep socket or?? Any idea on the size?

Lightbulb

some extra tips for the replacement on the 4.4i X5 Vacuum pump :

-- for the 3x M6x25 torx bolts use 8 torx socket[listed previously] and torque this M6 bolts to 10 NM [from the factory they are torqued to 10.5NM] - Note : dry !
-- in order to turn the engine by hand [manually] by the main engine bolt - use 27mm 3" DEEP 6 point socket or 1-1/16 6pt deep socket - [the 12 points are to lose] .
-- also you will need 1x 20 mm O screw clamp to replace the original one on the hose from the vacuum pump ....

It's a big one. I just did this last weekend with the kit from BMP design. It's a relatively cheap kit - around $20. Maybe just do that?

Initially - I tried to re-seal the pump cover, but that didn't work.

Looks like they are some sort of BMW / Mercedes indy in the area. I bet they do a lot of pump seal replacements! Oh and by the way - after replacement mine is DRY as a bone! Yay me!

Vacuum Pump / Brake Booster Pump O-ring replacement

Not seeing the correlation between the brake booster pump and emissions / smoking. I know other BMW's / Audi's have a pump that's related to emissions (sounds like a hairdryer) - these are not related as far as I know. This is a different vacuum pump.

Let us know your findings crwarren11... I share your view on this theory and also need to give my vacuum pump some attention and have been thinking the same thing!
