Urgent something is wrong with my brakes
the car has 122,000 miles on it. I went for a test ride and the pedal goes right to the floor. I can pump it up, it stops then the pedal drifts to the floor. Both rotors are hot after pressing the pedal about 100 time in 2 miles so, wouldn't that rulle out bad calipers? Does the system need to be bled? With the old brakes the fluid was at min mark. with the calipers compressed with the new pads the fluid is full mark. Also the brake light is still on. I replace the brake sensor and its on. I need to know where to go next, thanks! |

Any reason you would have gotten air in the system? Did you take the cap off and forget to replace it? I've haven't done brakes on the X, just other cars.
I would start with checking the bleed valves, cap and then make sure the fluid levels are still within spec. Maybe bleed some....and pump a lot before you drive.

check for leaks
before pushing pistons back you should always clamp the flexi hose then fit a bleed pipe to bleed valve , then open bleed valve , then push piston back , this drains contaminated fluid . because you have pushed cooked and contaminated fluid back through the system you could have potentially damaged the abs hydraulic unit . I always recommend a fluid flush before any brake work just to be sure all old fluid is removed . you should try a complete flush now and hope for the best . |

Removing the cap wouldn't let air into the system unless you allowed the fluid to run out of the ressy . Check for leaks then blead the system.

it is possible that the seals in the master cylinder are worn . this has happened to lot`s of X5`s .
you will know for sure when you bleed the system because no fluid or very little fluid will bleed from the defective circuit . use the brake pedal to test bleed pressure . when the seals wear out , fluid can bleed back into reservoir . you say the front brakes are getting hot so they are functioning. this would suggest that the rear circuit is faulty , if the fault is at the master cylinder . |

To a mechanic.
Seriously though, if your brake fluid hasa been in there long enough to go through a set of pads, that also means that you're due for a fluid change as well. Please go spend $9 on a large bottle of fluid, get a friend who knows what they're doing and do the job completely instead of only half the job, which is exactly what you've done.

Her is what I'm doing today.... since most everyone thinks it may be fluid related I'm going to flush the system. I have been reading up and it seems like I can do it with one of those hand vacumm pumps.
After that if it needs a Master cylindar or calipar work then I'll find a mechanic that knows how to fix further. Hey this is how you learn... I won't ever change brakes without flushing the system again! |
