Burning oil - Heavy blue smoke - Please help
I purchased a 2002 3.0D Sport X5 in Decemeber but since the snow its burning oil and can see a fog of blue smoke behind me. The car idles fine, when reved the engine sounds fine, no loss of power however upon rev a smoke screen of blue smoke is coming out of the exhaust. I also took the dipstick out and it started to push out oil so I put the oil dipstick back in. It doesnt overheat either and if I didnt look behind me i wouldnt know anything was wrong. There are no engine management lights on. The AA got me back and said it looks like the rings but I dont think its the case. Anyone able to help or advise? I hear this could be a breather issue but should blue smoke excessivley be produced? Thanks Bin |

Could well be a blocked breather for the turbo or the EGR valve on top. Sounds like the crankcase pressure is too high whatever it is. Get the codes read by someone with a scanner or a dealer sooner rather than later.
As you've got a UK Diesel, try the xdrivers site in the UK and see if anyone there can help. It's a pretty knowledgeable bunch for the oil burners..... You should only get a puff of smoke on first cold start up in cold weather - never at any other time. Blue smoke on revs is something to sort fast. Might be a diy or easy fix too.

Thanks,
Your correct the crankcase pressure is high but didnt think it would smoke and hence my thought was something more serious. I will attempt to change the breather as I found a set of instructions. I've done some DIY before so hopefully I can do the change over. Thanks |

You MUST replace the oil breather filter kit, urgently to avoid any damage to thye engine...and then you can check and see if it still smokes. If it does then its another I can help you with, but the oil breather replacement is now imperative! |

Thanks Powers1,
I will be changing this tonight so will hopfully have some news if this is fixed or not. powers1 once I have changed the breather would there still be unburnt oil that will need burning off or would the change of breather be instant and hopefully smoke disappear relavtively quick (if this works obviously)

Do an oil change, there might be too much oil in the engine

Whats an oil change got to do with it!
The OP didnt say whether he checked his oil level!Even if its too high,he can just take some off. His URGENT problem at the momment is to replace the oil breather filter ,then he can check his oil level(which is impossible to do now due to crankcase pressure)..and I already advised NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR and risk damage to the engine, until he replaces the filter. |

Powers1 I changed the breather yesterday, good news is that the oil is not coming out of the dipstick.
Bad news is the car is still smoking like crazy. Went for a quick run, looked behind me and it's blue smoke everywhere. ![]() My suspicion of rings could be likely, as it smokes more under load. How can I confirm it's the rings? Any idea of cost? Any other ideas what it maybe? Also how long would I have to keep the car on since changing the breather before I know this is another issue, the car wasnt fully warm as I didnt want to risk more damage. It hasn't lost power and idles fine and with no engine management lights on vary if it's rings. Still paying for Christmas....last thing I needed.
