My dad and I decided to go a slightly different route. Bought two exhaust pipe adapters from PepBoys – 2-1/8"ID X 2-1/2"OD ($2/ea.), trimmed off what we didn't need. Ractive tips were trimmed 1-3/4". The adapters were welded on, the tips were slid over the adapters (snug fit), and then we put a pop rivet in through the bottom so the tips could be removed in the future.

The tips stick out almost the same amount that they did before we trimmed them (sitting flush against the muffler).
