Finally the Tranny died!!! I think.
The X Finally gave up the ghost yesterday. I was driving down from Bellingham to Olympia and about 80 miles into the drive I stopped at StarBucks and when I went back out to leave the X died. It reverse out no problem but when I went to first gear it did not want to engage the gear. I at low RPM it would roll forward till about 15-20mph. I got into the road and realized that there was something wrong. I stopped turned the X off and then restarted it and the problem went away until I got to 35 mph, then the engine would just race or rev up but no forward motion. I tried running in first or second gear manually but nothing. I could stop turn the X off and then re-start and it would go for a little bit like up to 30 mph and then the tranny would slip. I did throw a code it was P0734 incorrect gear ratio gear 4. The weird thing is she showed no sign of any issues with the transmission. I ended up having her towed back home and I rented a car and went on my way. I will find out whats up and keep you posted. I think we had a good run together it died at 308,393 miles. I was emotionally torn as I was waiting for this day to come and happy I made it this long. I think I will go buy and M5 to make my self feel better.

That is sad.
Please update us on what it turns out to be. It is a bit strange how there were no warning signs. Are you going to get it fixed or call it a day and sell it as is? Your 307,xxx miles is an inspiration to us who have held onto older E53s. My '02 has "only" 105,000 on it and would love it to last as long as yours did/has.

Only 300,000 miles huh? Not too shabby my friend. No chance I suppose you have some kind of warranty on it? I too would be curious to know what finally crapped out. And btw, did you ever change the transmission fluid, if so how many times and how frequently, etc?

For the car to go that far.. I'd fix the tranny and keep trucking (if thats the only problem) Let us know what happens.

If you wanna wait for a month or less, I'll be moving back to the Seattle area (Edmonds or Mill Creek) and I can help w/ the swap. I say convert it to a 5spd and enjoy it until the engine dies...but get the M5 in the meantime

I would do what James said. The manual swap process will probably be more expensive and labor intensive but you will end up with a transmission that won't give you any more problems.

I will pass on the manual 5 speed. I am too lazy, and the auto trans went 308,000 miles before is died so I would say it was very trouble free. That's what is weird the last few months the X has been running excellent, pulling hard, with no issues what so ever. Then it just died. We will see Monday once I get some info on whats going on.
