Glass Insurance - Thoughts?

I am curious how many of you carry full coverage glass insurance? I am insured by AllState for both my e46 M3 and e53 x5. I just re-looked at my premium for just the glass coverage and noticed it is damn near $800 combined every six months!

I know glass is expensive, especially OEM and OE quality, but $1600 a year makes it seem not worth it. I do drive a bit on the freeways but replacing windshields is rare... Knock on wood. My deductible is $500, I could certainly increase that and the premier payment would go down, but again, really doesn't seem worth it.

What do you guys think? Do you guys have glass coverage on your car insurance program?

It's included in MA comp. insurance. If it wasn't I wouldn't get it - especially with that price, deductible, and pretty low probability of it getting smashed.

The details and situ vary by state...
In NC, our cars have 'coverage' but it only is covered as a result of 'accident', as in a crash. If I want glass coverage for casual replacement, it's a bunch of dough more, similar to your example...thus, I pass.

I don't have an extra glass insurance on mine but when it's time to replace they only offer OEM (not real OE for my Audi/BMW).

Like you said you rarely replace one, and my suggestion is put a scotch tape on a little chip/crack then take it quickly to Novus etc to get resin injected, it's free for many insurance company and save you time/money instead of replacing a whole winshield.

IMHO, buying too much insurance is not a good idea.

I agree. I had one of my windows broken to steal my TomTom and I did not know I was fully covered under my insurance. I was told in NYC you get 3 windows a year under full insurance coverage. You wont get OEM's but OE quality.

i know the front windshield must be OEM because you cannot get it form anywhere. i went though this a couple years back... i put up a stink asking for OEM glass, they said no then called me back saying that you can only get OEM glass. i want to say that it was only like 500$ therefore 1600$ a year is ludicrous. not sure on the side widows... i would imagine that they are not as expensive as the windscreen.

best thing to do would call a glass place and get a quote for front, rear, and the rear 1/4 glass. those would be the most expensive and most likely have to be OEM. the other i would imagine you can get after market for good price.

In Ireland, glass coverage tends to be automatic with comprehensive insurance policies. No extra cost and there's no deductible.

I recently had rear door glass replaced. The company who did it made a complete mess of it. They absolutely butchered the interior trim panel ... it's now full of cracks and the leather covering is all torn. My integrated window blind won't retract any more, it's stuck open. They didn't put the panel on properly, I can insert a finger between the glass and the panel now. They broke all the rubbers around the edge of the door, the exterior trim pieces are badly scratched and bent out of shape. It rattles too while driving. Complete mess.

Think this evening I made some ground towards having them pay for the main dealer to replace the interior panel, blind, exterior trim pieces and all the rubber seals. Fingers crossed !
