Chains/Cables for 19" wheel/tire combo

I remember there was place mentioned that sold 19" cables/chains that fit BMW's 19" V/Y-Spoke rims with 19" tires. Any recommendations? CHP does require chains from time-to-time on certain mtn roads.

Thanks in advance.

I just saw Costco selling a product for 19's which they call SnowClaws.

Here's the link:

Thanks. Looks promising.

I just don't want any chains/cables/etc. to damage the wheels due to our low profile tires.

I also found the website for Z-chains http://www.scc-chain.com/index.asp

I guess my questions is who has experience with either products on the X5 with 19" wheels....Pros and cons?

Thanks again.

I have dry mounted the Z Chains (actually cables) on my 19" Y spoke wheels. The clearance was OK. It looked like a good snug fit of the cables to the tires with little chance of the cables rubbing the rims.

When running up to Tahoe the CHP requires everyone carry chains, but it's generally agreed that by the time chains are required on 4 wheel drive, everyone is stopped anyways.

By the way, I'm running Pirelli Scorpions, which I believe is the best compromise for the 2% snow conditions my X5 sees.

What model of Z chain do you have? I couldn't get their Z575 onto the rear 285s (I couldn't button up the last hook...needed about 2 more inches in cable lengths). I tried moving the car forward and backward. I even tried jacking up the car...still no dice. Their next size up, the Z579, were too loose fitting.

Great advice. Actually, I do have the Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetricos on my 19" wheels and I can attest that it allowed me to go through 18 inches of fresh powder with no problems.

Which type of Z-chains did you get?

Funny thing, the reason for getting the Z-chains/cables is to go north on 395 and pass through Mammouth and go to Reno/Tahoe area!

Thanks for your advice.

My Z Chain's are model Z-579. These were sold to me by my BMW dealer and confirmed correct for my 285-45 19" sport tires.

Once installed there was about 6" of excess in the take up cable. Z Chain provides a plastic piece to prevent the excess from flopping around, but I cut it off. It was a good snug fit.

18" of fresh powder sounds exciting! I hope I get the chance to try my X5 in some.

That is definitely very odd.

SCC-Chain's website indicates that the correct chain/cable size for a 285/45-19 tire is Z575. I've tried both the Z575 and Z579 (the next size up from the Z575), but neither one fit properly on my tire. The Z575 is just a tiny bit short and the Z579 is too long.

Now...You claimed that the Z579 fit perfect on your tire. But another member (Ventanabike) claimed that the Z575 fit perfect on his (look at this thread => http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e53-forum/...ht=tire+chain). I found that neither one fitted mine. So...does different tire manufacturers varies that much on their tire design for the same tire size such that it makes a certain chain fit one tire but not another?

After all this research and trials, I still can't find a chain that will fit my 285/45-19 properly

I doubt the manufacturer of the tire makes much difference of the Z Chain fit. As the Z Chain has adjustable tightening points on the outside cable, I was able to cinch up the Z579 cables for a snug fit on my 285/45-19's.

Very interesting. I ended up purchasing a set of Z575 this past weekend. I have actually called into Z Chain and spoke to a rep for a good 15 minutes and that is what he recommended. When I first went to pick up my chains at NAPA Autoparts they gave me the Z579's I asked them for the Z575 insated and they reordered one for me. They were confused themselves as why the first time I was given Z579's . They looked in the application guide and it turns out that an older app guide called out for the z579 and the newer called out for a z575. I haven't had the opportunity to try the Z575 so I am not sure if they work yet. I am running stock 19" Diamaris.

For those who couldn't get the chains to fit, what tires are you running?
