Many BMWs there is a fail safe opening on the trunks, with that in mind I would give the key a try on the rear gate. You turn the key and then apply a little extra pressure and it unlocks the trunks lock if the feature is in place in the locking mechanics.

::Correction, there is not a rear key on the X5. I pulled lift gate information up that was from a wagon not an X5. Sorry for the confusion.::
