hey guys, need your help about timing chain!
recently i m hearing a noise from the timing chain....my mechanic had a look at it, and found the timing chain was loose, so he thought it was low in oil, so he added some oil and the chain seems to be tighten up a bit due to the hydrolic tensioner...and it seems the noise has been reduced a bit, but still there. so my question is could this be the rail guard of the chain is broken thats causing the noise? anyone experienced this pls help. thanks !!

Oh dear, so do I. I had the same noise, topped it up with oil and fooled myself into thinking it got quieter. Then tried to drive it to the garage. Big mistake as the whole tensioner/guide chain arrangment collapsed. The noise might be a vanaos unit, which will not do any damage for a while, but dont forget there are 3 tensioners and chains in the system. The guides and tensioner blades are made out of plastic which is not very strong when new, and is even more brittle when its been in an engine for a while, so they dont like a loose camchain.
So, my advice if you are absolutely certain the noise is coming from the camchain, is not to drive any further but to get the front of the engine open and check it out. It will be cheaper in the long run as I know from experience. However I did have the fun of rebuilding a V8 in my garage. Last edited by IanP; 09-13-2011 at 01:25 PM.

oh that sucks.
my mechanic opened up the oil cap, and looked at the chain....he said it was loose when i just driven in ....and he topped with oil, and let it idle for a while, and checked again, the chain is tight again....do you know whats going on there?...is this the same thing you tried? the noise was there for almost a month already..if not 3 weeks.. should i stop driving? the problem is the mechanic told me once they have to open up..its a 22 hrs job..which is about 4k...thats alot foir this car i think.

Yeah, thats what I tried, but the engine only did about another 50 miles before eating itself. If you have done a fair few miles with the rattle then it might be the vanaos, but if you are doing them then you may as well do the chains, tensioners and guides at the same time. 22 hours is about right, and as you have to take the radiator off you will need regass and possibly to top up the auto box when you are done

Vanaos is BMW's variable valve timing system, varies the cam timing. Its on the inlet cams on the 4.6. Lots of threads on these failing, but they just seem to rattle, try looking on you tube to get some idea of the noise. If your mechanic is a BMW guy then he will know all about these.

I would think if they rattle for long enough then something will break as its due to internal oil leakage. Some can be overhauled, but not the ones from the 4.6 I understand.
After I stripped the engine to repair the damage caused by a so called experts work, I found he had damaged the camshaft sealing rings for the Vanaos which can alsoi cause it to rattle. Make sure whoever works on your engine knows what he is doing. Have a look on RealOEM.com Online BMW Parts Catalog which will show you all of the bits.These engines are not very strong in my opinion so I would try and get it sorted before it costs you big money. Or get rid
