Engine Overheating Alternator Power Steering Issues
The next day I checked the coolant levels; reservoir filled. Oil filled, etc. Although the alternator light was on, the car started just fine in the morning. I am curious to know if anyone has had a similar issue with their X5? And, if so what was the problem? |

Very odd set of challenges. When you start the car does it make any noise? Your belt tensioner could be bad allowing the belt to slip therefore causing the burning smell (rubber). Or the shop put the wrong size belt on it when they replaced the alt. This could also make it slip instead of running the water pump and power steering. A loose belt would explain all of that. One belt drives everything under the hood, with exception to the a/c compressor. When rubber gets hot it gets greasy and melts a bit, so if its loose, there you go...

Mystery solved (well maybe). The shop that replaced my alternator DID NOT replace the belt. They could not give me a valid explanation as to why the belt was not replaced. Anyway, I am making an appointment with another shop to replace the belt. Cross your fingers.

Great, they will know immediately if the tensioner is bad. I always keep a spare belt in with the spare tire, you never know when you will need one and who will have it on the shelf.
If it is the tensioner: X5 Cooling System Parts Belt: X5 Cooling System Parts BTW, the water cooled Alt sells for $399, the other $390. Keep them honest.
