Had mine done the other week & its a noticeable improvement. Much better pull lower down, if you slam your foot down it takes off leaving your eyeballs on the back seat.
I had the stock 184bhp and its now approx 214bhp with 489Nm.Not sure what the fuel economy was before but now I get an average 30-32mpg on the motorway at 80-85mph & less round town. Mine was an ECU remap as opposed to a plugin box which can be troublesome I've heard. I'm considering the air filter upgrade (K&N) as well but I've heard this is a b*stard to fit so going to wait till its a bit warmer! |

I have a tunit box on mine and it flies now. I had to take the box off the other week for warranty work, it was horrible, I cant drive without it now.

The icelink importer here chipped his 2004 demo model and 6 mnths later had problems with the transmittion. He got the X boosted to approx. 260HP (can't remmeber the tourqe).
A friend of mine is going to chip his 530d. I'll post commentswhen it happens. |

I've covered 26000 miles since March 05 and can't find a reason to change to a 4.4 or 4.8. I would obviously want to for the V8 etc but covering the milage I do in a year the fuel bills would be huge (if I want to drive like a nutter I take out the 996 ).The main benefit of a box is it's removable and there is no trace as far as the dealer is concerned. Go for it!

Heres what my mate said in an email before I got mine done.
"A box just fools the ECU (by adjusting some sensor sigs) into over fuelling essentially – how it does it will differ from one to another. Some just raise fuel pressure which isn’t the safest thing to do for well being of pump and some extend injection period which is better for pump but can get smokey and sometimes run highish EGT’s. They’re ok though, but read some stuff on the net and you’ll find that remaps are much the preferred option amongst those who’ve sampled both." The specs he quoted were as follows: < 2003: 184bhp=>214bhp 409Nm=>489Nm > 2003: 218bhp=>248bhp 500Nm=>565Nm I went for a box in my previous car (Golf TDI) which was great. Loads of power & torque but it wasn't the smoothest of delivery and did pump out smoke quite a bit when you boot it. What I notice about the remap in the X5 is that its a lot smoother power delivery (even from stock) and doesn't kick out a lot of smoke when you boot it. As for it being detected, dealers probably wouldn't notice and don't really care (I actually left my box in by mistake once when the Golf went in for a service & nothing was said). The key point is if you declare it to your insurance company or not. |
