Also just did this fix, much happier car now and much more relaxed driver when parallel parking. Thanks @BULK.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention as my e53 is doing the "spaz" out movement as well when put into reverse. Will be doing this week.

BMW DIY Guy is on a distinguished road
I have read through the whole thread and have one question: I GENTLY pry up and off the mirror using the "special pry tool". Looks like my plastic trim tool will work perfectly for that.

Is there anything I need to do PRIOR to that? First step is pry off the mirror? Nothing else comes off first?
