Enabling Daytime Running Lights (DRLs)?
I would like to enable the daytime running lights on my car, and the dealer quoted me $150 to do this. I figure I can probably buy an adapter for that much and keep it around for the next time I want to make one of these changes... So, I have been reading and it seems like you need a WinXP laptop with some software and a special usb/serial adapter to connect to the OBD-II port... I found this cable/adapter: BMW E53 X5 M54 3.0L > Search > Usb > ES#6928 OBDII USB Diagnostic Cable - VT1A0003 Is this the adapter I need? What about software? I have hard of NCSExpert and others... But what do I really need? Thanks! |

DRL on the E53 employs the halogen high beams at lower output than when used as the high beam.

They are not switchable. The feature is programmed by the dealer or with specialized equipment you can purchase.

I'd leave the DRLs off. I dont have a pic of mine, but it certainly doesnt look good in my opinion. My halos are so dim that even the DRLs overpower them.
Go with some brighter halos as your DRLs. Did that on my previous BMW and loved it.

DRL
DRLs are law here in Canada. When buying a car from the US you need to take it to a BMW dealer to have the DRL activiated, the cost....$500!
DRL's on an E53 look pretty good, paired with angel eyes look even better. |

I agree. From a safety standpoint that already wins in my book. however I like driving with my AEs ON, fog lamps ON, low beam OFF. so the DRL had to go...
