Thanks for the info, guys. There are so many different brands (many cheap ones with no brand name) and wattages - I have seen everything from 3W to supposedly 60W. I think I have decided to go with this for $90:
iJDMTOY® 7000K Xenon White 15W CREE High Power LED

I'm looking for color that matches my bi-xenon lights that is bright enough to see during the day, but not so bright that it washes out.

After reading another post where someone said they had the iJDMTOY quit working after a few months, I spent the bucks and got the Weisslicht LED Angel Eye upgrade and installed them yesterday. Seems to work fine, but mine is brighter on the drivers side, because the previous owner replaced the entire headlight assembly earlier this year before I bought it. The light is directed into a little lens that ricochets it through the corona ring. Apparently my original one on the passenger side is a little weathered. I might take it back off and see if I can clean that with some rubbing alcohol. I know the outer plastic shows some wear, although not bad enough for me to do a complete headlight restoration on it. I wish I could just buy the outer plastic instead of it being an entire headlight assembly.

Good news for folks with the 3.0L 6 cylinder: there is nothing to move out of the way - there was direct access to both sides on my `06!

The Weisslichts will burn out too if you don't turn off the cold bulb check through coding. I went through 2 of them before turning cold bulb check off. All LEDs are affected by the cold bulb check...

Sounds like I need to do that. Can anyone direct me to a 'beginner' thread for scanner tool and software? I read something a while back, but my searches are getting me advanced threads on programming, etc... Not sure which scanner or cable I need, software, etc... I doubt I will get into any re-programming (other than killing this 'cold bulb check'), would like to be able to read fault codes, etc... I have a laptop with Win 7...

There was a guy on eBay from Romania that was selling a DVD with a bunch of software and a scan head for pretty cheap but that was years ago when I got mine. I haven't looked on there for a while.
Also there was a guy on this forum that explained how to code that out but I'm not on this site much anymore and I don't remember was his user name was. Hopefully some folks will chime in here and help you out

PA soft is another programmer that's easier to use but I'm not sure if it will get into the software deep enough to turn off cold bulb check

TiminIndy - How are the Weisslicht LED Angel Eye upgrades doing? Did you turn off cold bulb check? Thanks.

Ive just purchased these, i will report how they install and operate.

10W CREE LED Angel Eye Halo Light Bulb BMW E39 E60 5 Series M5 x5 E53 E63 E65 X3 | eBay

Was not the cheapest, but had a lot of previous sales
I doubt its actually a CREE LED, but who knows.

You can buy the same product for $20 with Free Delivery on eBay.
Thank you for the "Cold Bulb Check" tip.

UPDATE: Fitted the above.

1. They are not as bright as i thought they would be
(probably as bright as OEM, just a different temp range)
2. They flash when you first turned on
(so they need coding to turn off "Cold Check")
3. Because of their construction, it is VERY hard to twist-lock them in position
(I'd buy some with a hex construction next time)
4. They run hot, so be careful how and where you mounted the LED driver.
