ok, road service crew came out, jumped it and started fine. Battery is a late 2009 OE BMW one so should be ok, all things being equal.

So, OBC test done - voltage fluctuated between 13.2-13.5 at differing engine speeds. Does that indicate anything?

That OBC is pretty cool. Plenty of info in there. Particularly liked the digital speed readout.

Prophead - drivers door mirror light worked fine (as did passengers)...

cheers

Monitor voltage while driving. It will display for about 15 min. Make sure there is load. Like lights, heat/AC, stereo. As if everything is normal.

13.5 is ok. Closer to 14 would be better. Still think it's the battery just because your radio turns off out of no where and then turns on.

Battery year is irrelevant. It could be deep cycle drained a bunch of times, and is probably not holding charge well. I had this issue with a red top, twice. Stopped buying that garbage.

Curious if your car goes to sleep as well. How good are you with a volt meter?

have dropped it off at my mechanics. Not a BMW place, but he has the skills (and the diagnostic equipment) and I trust him.

Pointing to a current draw somewhere (hopefully in a part that's nice and cheap!), but will see what he comes up with. I am outta town for a few days so won't know what's up with it until late in the week. Will post up what transpires.

thanks for the replies thus far.

Slick, handy with the voltmeter but hopefully my mechanic is handier! Were you suggesting testing draw whilst systematically pulling fuses? Read about that on here somewhere... Anyway, fingers crossed it is a battery - prob cheapest way out...

Yea good luck. Check the basics first. Bluetooth, radio, FSR, navi.

Righto - 3 days of testing by my mechanic turned up nothing. Tested for draw and said it was only 0.003A so has him baffled. No fault codes. Battery still "super strong".

What a champion though - not charging me a single cent for all the testing. Slab of beer coming his way...

So, has got me stuffed.

Next step probably giving to BMW for their diagnostics - $240 for 1 hour of testing.

EDIT: is there such a thing as the car going into sleep/protect mode if it thinks it is getting stolen? Doesn't explain how it starts immediately when jumped, but it's so weird was wondering if it could be something like that? Maybe there is an issue with the back-up battery in the alarm which tricks the car into thinking it is trying to be stolen? See my desparation!!

Ok, re-starting this thread to see if some info can pop a light on for anyone.

Firstly, haven't had a dead battery since I previously posted. a couple of months back

Anyway, just hooked up my boat for the first time since I have owned the X5 and checked the trailer lights (LED's) and all worked fine but the left side trailer light was flashing on and off (like a turn signal) but at 1/4 brightness, even when the car was off/locked.

Got the multimeter out and the voltage for a couple of pins in the plug on the car were rythmically alternating between approx 0.01V and 0.52V - perhaps explaining the flashing left trailer light.

So, another piece of the puzzle of the mystery dead battery - maybe the plug is shorting and draining current, eventually leading to a dead battery...

Does this seem plausible??

And, any ideas why I would have alternating power to the pins even when the car is off?
Thanks

At this point I would suspect the alternator. You should see 14.5 to 14.7V when the car is running, to charge the battery.

At 14.5 - 14.7 you are burning something in your car. Why don't you unlock your OBC and see what you are running.
