Neutral Safety Switch

Hi,

i am a new member in this forum i like so much. I'm a owner of a BMW X5 4.4i 2001. My problem is a i got a DTC P0705 by scanning my car and i noticed with this message Trans. Fail safe prog on the board. My PRND is often turned off while driving. Sometime when the car is at a rest for a long time and i start it on, this PRND is switch on at P position and R,N or D which is normal but when start driving and braking, the light goes off and the message appears. Did anybody have the same issue? Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

PS: when i drive for a moment and park the car. it would'nt start anymore. i have to wait for certain time to start it again.

the code means "transmission range sensor circuit malfunction". Refer to your mechanic to solve the problem. It may result of an open or short circuit in the switching circuit between P & N. Poorly positioned switch or bad wiring problem. The trans failsafe program will show up whenever anything comes wrong with the transmission gearbox or related mechanical/electrical connections and it doesn't mean that something too serious is happened to your transmission

The inhibitor switch isn't cheap so it's worth testing it to see if the fault lies with the switch itself or with the wiring/connector.

The switch is mounted on the right hand side of the transmission casing (protected by a tin cover), with the connector mounted nearby on a bracket below the oil pump housing (between the transmission sump and the bellhousing)

If the switch is faulty don't buy use. I replace a similar switch for my Audi Quattro with the zf 4hp18 trans and it took me all day. If BMW use the switch to provide direct power to the reverse lamp you can bet that eventually the switch will burn up due to the current used by the bulbs.

The inhibitor switch is called many things, including XYZ switch, gear position switch, neutral safety switch, transmission selector switch, transmission range sensor, etc.

They’re all the same thing.
