I ended up buying expensive cool carbon pads. Installed them today. Gonna bed them in tomorrow.

Carbotechs are awesome. Really good pad. I use them on the M5 and the X5. Yes they cost a little bit more than the average pad but there compound works well for bite low dust generation. I run the 1521's on both vehicles.

Do they still work with the OEM sensors? Do you order online or through a local specialty shop?

OEM is all I use. The stopping power of ceramic pads are not up to par woth OEM.

Many brands, many choices. Where you are located (Country) and what the local prices are, will impact your decisions and are factors to consider.

Biggest factor: How do you drive? Frustrated boy racer? Commuter hell? Like someone else owns the car and will pay for repairs? Slow down when you see a stop light long before you get there? Weekend runner? Track Rat want2B?

Personal experiences
OE pads
Plus: cold bite, stopping power, fit for any applications
Minus: Dust, Dust, Dust (carbon based for cold bite)
Cost: $$$

Cool Carbon Ceramic
Plus: No dust, great bite when warmed up, Ok stone cold
Minus: Applications for 3.0, and 4.4. No on IS models (4.6, 4.8)
Cost: $$$

Raybestos
OE manufacturer and manufacture their own pads, rotors, misc parts
Plus: No dust, great stopping power, many applications
Minus: Cold bite, Needs to warm up - Metallic Pads only
Cost: $, $$

Power Stop
Z16/Z17 (w/o hardware kits and w/ hardware) Ceramic
Plus: No dust, great cold and hot
Minus: None
Cost: $$

Bendix
Multiple products and applications
Builds own pads, Buys everything else and repackages under their name
Plus: Price
Minus: Quality
Cost: $

Off brands: Pep Boys, Advance Auto, O'Riely's, AutoZone, etc.
Buys everything and repackages under their name or sell under a "White Box" with just a part number on it. In the Auto Industry this is called "No Name? No Blame!" packaging.
Plus: Price
Minus: Quality
Cost: $

NAPA
see Raybestos as they sell it to them under the NAPA name.

I could go on but these are more than enough......

Rat racers might want to go with semi race pads (heavy foot)
Track rats will require an expensive upgrade to Big Brakes - Best money spent, as these will stop you over and over again without fade.

Bottom Line: Your life, your wallet, choose wisely.

A quick look at rmeuropean dot com shows, for FRONT Brake Pads:

* OEM: $131

* Akebono: $89

* ATE: $59

* Jurid: $90

* Pagid: $64

* Textar: $51

Don't know about X5, but in my E39 (1998 528i) and 1998 Volvo S70, I have used all four brands ATE, Jurid, Pagid, and Textar without any issues.

What is the BEST BANG for the BUCKS for X5?
