Something I did notice on my car with the soft rubber clear CCV hoses;
- At cold initial startup it sucks a blast of oil into the hoses and the hoses wanted to collapse from the vacuum (oil in right hose is always more then left side - could be left CCV valve closes/seals first). Within a minute I hear a ticking (like a lifter) - it stops ticking within seconds then the hose returns to shape (vacuum adjusts) Assuming the valvetronics/throttle valve are adjusting themselves. With the clear hoses, I can see that the oil in them has a chance to drain back easily to the valve cover. With the OEM (corrugated) tube assembly, the oil is trapped in the canals waiting for the next cold startup (high vacuum). ** Remember in cold conditions, the throttle valve is fully open because this has a positive effect on the starting characteristics. Intake and oil

I'm still working on the smoking issue. I finally took off the air tube to my intake today, and took a photo inside of the intake. I was looking for the oil in the intake issue many have been talking about. I am posting the photo here. I don't see any oil to speak of, I mean there is some black, but no oil. Does this mean that the issue is not caused by vacuum issues? Or could it still be a vacuum issue?

I hope this link works

You're not going to see much by taking the fresh air tube off & opening your throttle valve (although you should clean that up). Pull your CCV hose(s) & lay it upright on a paper towel to drain. Depending on the condidtion of the hose(s), be careful because the plastic may be brittle.

You may have 2 separate hoses on yours - see this SIB:

Okay, I will go try that. If there is no oil in them, do you think it is probably just a valve stem seal issue? I have the blue smoke on extended idle. I notice is the most when I am creeping along in traffic, or through a drive through. It's actually difficult to recreate the problem by just letting my car sit idle.

- It would help if we knew;
- Year, Model, Engine, Miles
- How are your CCV diaphragms?
- CCV hose condition (a small leak can act just like bad diaphragms)

I have a problem with carbon buildup on my pistons that I'm trying to get clean. My engine sucked oil for so long that my piston tops look like a mountain range. You need to check the obvious and work from there.

Sorry, I am the OP on this thread, but realize it's been a while since I participated. My car is a 2006 BMW X5 4.8is and has 120,000 miles. I've had the problem since probably 90,000 miles. I have already replaced the CCV diaphragms, and when I did there was nothing wrong with the old ones. I don't have hoses going to the ccv's, mine are the ones that install right into the valve cover.

I can't seem to get the vacuum hoses off. They have some sort of black plastic clip that holds them in place, and I'm not sure how they function.

oil in hose

Okay, I got one of the hoses off. It seems to have some oil residue inside, but it is by no means pouring or even dripping out of the hose. But if I put my finger in it there is oil on my finger.

My wife just took the car - otherwise I'd photo. The outer ring on the fitting has 2 pinch points (index & thumb on opposite sides squeeze - if plastic is stiff - use a small screwdriver at ring attached to hose assembly. If you're not sure - I'll post a photo later.

And it smells badly of oil.
