E53 2004 Xenon Light Question. Maybe, just maybe....
...someone can answer this question (even if 90% of members are in the US so may not have a clue what I'm talking about).
Recently had a prang in my LHD 2005 X5 with bi-Xenon lights and have just sourced a used replacement n/s Headlamp unit to subsitute the damaged one. The replacement light is from a UK spec RHD model (both have the same clear indicators). For some reason they are listed in RealOem as different part numbers, but considering that the X5 has a manual adjustment for LH/RH driving, I'd expect the lights to be the same, or will I have problems with the LCM? Is this even an issue with Xenon (which should all point straight, no? Ballast etc. etc.) I could also strip the innards from my light and fit them to the donor light if the LCM becomes a problem. Not really expecting a huge response, but just in case there are any European members out there... any advice would be appreciated. Cheers, Kev. Last edited by Kev; 04-30-2013 at 04:42 PM. |

strange - we have two unrelated questions in one thread...
about the seat belt - chances are that the seat belt buckle in the passenger seat is malfunctioning... it was a known issue in E39 and some E34s... start with simple things first - check fuse F44 in glove compartment. if the fuse is ok (test with multimeter, or replace outright with a 5A fuse), then the issue could be in the buckle itself... i think part # 72119119540... if you are DIY type guy, you may want to check plug X279 under the passenger seat, and short pins 5 and 7. DO NOT DISCONNECT CONNECTOR X279 (Yellow connector under the seat). try to locate the pins 5 and 7 without disconnecting the connector - if you disconnect the connector, you will light up the airbag symbol in the cluster and deactivate the passenger airbag. Another option, try to see if the passenger buckle can be taken apart, as there could be a mechanical issue that you might be able to resolve - when the belt is buckled, the belt's blade closes the contact that tells the computer to shut up. another option yet, program out the passenger seat belt notification, but remember, even if the passenger is buckled up, the force of the airbag will be reduced, as the system thinks that the belt is not fastened... now, about the headlight issue - the UK headlights have the metal cutout designed for the right-hand drive and have a manual switch for the UK cars to operate in the rest of Europe, the "continental" mode... the part numbers are obviously different, as the regular euro lights do not have the option for the UK cut-out... you should be able to use the UK headlight in europe, with the cutout permanently switched to the continental mode... i think, the continental mode makes the cutout flat, as opposed to a "step"... and you should have started a new thread about the headlight, instead of highjacking the seatbelt thread... |

I have had the same thing happen on my 2005 X5 4.4i. Odd thing was I took it to a friend's shop. His tech plugged in the diagnostic computer, found some old codes that my Peake didn't completely clear (none of the codes were related to the seatbelt latch). Upon clearing all the old codes and pending codes, my issue vanished.
I don't know why it work. I don't care why it worked. No more random chiming! TerminatorX5 has great thoughts above, but if those fail, then try getting the codes read and cleared with a GT1 (or GT1 software on a laptop).

about the contacts in the belt buckle - i will stand corrected... there are no contacts, there is a Hall effect sensor - needs to be replaced if faulty...

Yeah, I should have remembered they went away from contacts a while ago. Rather clever idea as then you don't have to worry about crumbs, soda, beer, flotsum, or jetsum getting into the receptacle and screwing up electrical contacts. I think the sensor pad in the seat also can develop issues. There's a 'hack' to disable the sensor pad and 'fake' the computer into thinking someone is in the seat. Supposedly it fakes out the seatbelt sensor too, so no more alarms. Bad thing is your passenger airbag is going off even if no one is in the seat (more $$$ to your repair bill) and you have to cut wires so the hack is noticable to anyone 'investigating' things. OP can search for threads on the air bag seat sensor to find out how to do this if all else fails, should they desire to do so.

I ended up replacing the buckle latch assembly as recommended. Found a salvaged unit on eBay for a good price and did the swap myself, pretty simple task. So far so good, no faulty seat belt warnings.
Thanks for all the feedback and help. |
