What do you think?

I am thinking about using Castrol Edge fully syn oil with a K&N filter. Is the a good combo (01, 4.4). I am also thinking about buying 2 of the big 5 liter bottles. One problem, I only need 8.5 qts, how can I tell when its time to stop?

Thanks in advance

Sure, you can use castrol as your oil, but not a K&N. Just go to the dealer and get a filter. A lot of people have tried different filters and either they have failed early, or the fitment isn't exact, or doesn't include the o rings... just a lot of problems.

As for oil amount, the side of the bottles have how many qts are in them, distinguished of a line. Fill the crank just shy of 8.5 and check the stick and add as needed.

You wrote that you have an 01 4.4...which would be the M62TU engine...are you sure it takes 8.5 quarts? I only ask because I've owned the M62 & M62TU (e38/e39) and they only took 8 quarts. My 06 4.4 (with the N62 engine) does take 8.5 quarts. Double check your owners manual...it should be listed in the Fluid Capacity section. Those that have the e53 w/M62TU engine...please chime in to correct me if I'm wrong.

I would also recommend shopping for any of the German Brand name oil filters:
  • BMW
  • Bosch
  • Meyle
  • Mann
  • Hengst
You can usually find the brands above online at forum sponsoring vendors, eBay, amazon.com, etc. You can usually buy multiple filters at a discount, and that way you'll be prepared for the next time you need to do an oil change.

In fact, if you look up the 11 digit BMW part nbr for the oil filter kit and type "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" into a google search box...you'll find pages full of vendors that sell the correct oil filter kit (includes the O-rings and washers).

Thank you, I will double check the oil amount. I will wait to get a Germany brand oil filter.

Castrol and Wix oil filter is fine.
K&N air filter isn't.

Thanks...I'll need to add this tidbit to my mental rolodex. Apparently there is a slight difference between the M62TU used in the sedans versus the SAVs.

Thanks for the education.

BTW...let me also add that the "German" brand name filters that I previously mentioned...may have "German" brand names...but could very well be "made in China" or other locals. But the brands mentioned are used by many BMW DIY'ers with no issues...as well as the brands mentioned by TMV.

If memory serves me correct, I think it was the STP filters that many e38 & e39 owners were having issues with where the oil filters were collasping or falling apart in the reservoir. And since the e38/e39/e53 share the same engines and oil filters...e53 owners should beware of this issue.

Just stick with Castrol 5W30 synthetic and a BMW filter like it was engineered to. You drive a BMW, not a Kia; take care of it and it will take care of you. I don't understand why people think it's absolutely necessary to go aftermarket on something that was built by engineers. When something fails, they blame it completely on the vehicle and almost never on the fact that they used some type of subpar part.

Re:built by engineers...it's a paper filter man (ha no pun intended). Sounds like he was simply asking if what was locally available was sufficient, and folks generally recommend ordering and OE or equivalent product. No need to condescend.
