I use Rola cross bars. Nice and thin but do make a slight whistle at 40 MPH... Easy to pop on and off with the security tool, I just put them on when needed...

Here's what you need:

1) Razor/card to peel back the rubber seals on inside of the racks.
2) Torx T40 bit to take off the racks from roof (hiding under the rubber seals)
3) Socket/wrench to take off metal anchors (after removing racks)
4) Plugs: (Can get them at any hardware store, Lowe's etc..)
(x8) - 11/16 - Large holes
(x2) - 5/8 - Smaller holes

It's VERY easy and straight forward, you don't really need a step by step on how to do it, unless you don't know what a wrench looks like..
Great write up Danny! If I just take the roof racks off but leave the mounts that bolt into the roof itself would it leak??
I am just repainting them and will be reinstalling them in a few days.

Thanks

When I deleted my rack I got plugs that fit the holes and painted them to match. Then put them in with a little silicone caulk. No leaks.
