Whistle e39 drivetrain swap into e53

anybody know of info on swapping the engine, tranny and rear diff from a e39 m5 into a 4.8is?
curious to know the costs involved in regards to custom parts needed, I can get a wrecked m5 no problem and a x5 manual for the pedals and stuff
labor I can do myself
what kind of coding or programming would I need to do? would it be possible with inpa, or ncs expert or gt1?

^ realized that this is not the smartest way to get more hp, so I want to change my question to what is the difference from a m5 engine to a 4.8is, and how much hp would aftermarket exhaust headers add, and a link to a 6speed swap would be much appreciated

Hits me as an endless nightmare.

Is your goal more performance, being unique, what?

a better question would be
what is the difference between the s62 and m62 other than the throttle bodys + intake and the tune? what gives it the extra 40 hp?
hp is the goal, supercharger is the only option i have found so far

even performance exhaust headers are 5gs

and i would like manual in about 60,000kms

BMW already thought about it. It won't work unless you remove all the front drive components to accommodate the oil pan on the S62. In addition, the other reason was there was not an automatic transmission built at the time to harness the power and torque of the S62 so BMW opted to simply increase the stroke of the 4.4 N62.

I went with Dinan. They had several more mods when I did mine but they still list engine software and a bigger throttle body. Products - Dinan, Leader in BMW Performance Parts and Upgrades

If you add low restriction exhaust along with the Dinan mods you would surely notice the difference.

About a year ago I searched for supercharger and turbo kits I could install. I never found either. Next step was to get two quotes for custom installs of each.

Both quotes for custom supercharger were around $10,000. The install would take 3 weeks with no time estimate for tuning time.

The estimates for turbos were both for twin turbos. One estimate was $8,500. Down time was about the same as the supercharger. The other estimate was from STS. Their install would be under the X. STSTurbo.com: Buy Custom Turbo Systems for Sale They were sure they would need it 4 weeks and could be more. I would have to take my X to Utah for the install.

I didn't do either. The route I went was Nitrous. I have a 150 shot with methanol injection. The nitrous won't fire if the methanol tank is dry and only at full throttle. The methanal synthetically increases the octane to around 104 so I have eliminated the risk of having it run too lean---nitrous + lean condition = big boom. HP is 525-540 depending on the dino and no one believes me when I tell them the torque numbers. They tell me if they are true the transmission would blow.

I show my X at the Dallas Cars and Coffee. Lots of lookers and many smiles and come look at this.

ess tuning might offer the e53 4.8is supercharger kit soon, 480hp
I would love to do exhaust headers but the only ones I found are around 5gs from supersprint, and them I would need to tune it for no cats and do the rest of the exhaust aswell

I have looked at headers also. Everything I found I think was way to expensive for too little gain. You could add an X pipe. It will deliver some of the scavenging benefits of headers and would not be that expensive. With closed exhaust the X pipe might be close to header benefits.

I don't need any more torque so I am going to go with electric cutouts that are remote controlled. I can open them any amount at any time. I don't do welding so I have been calling around to find someone that will do the job before I order them.

I had the nitrous installed at an Indy BMW performance specialist shop. I wanted experienced techs. The methanol is from snow performance and a straightforward install. I can adjust the flow to come in at any injector pulse width and be a full charge at any width as well. Nitrous cost was just under $4,000. Took 3 days to install and I had extra testing done so that took almost a week.

Yea i dont care for awd, so if a loose it its just more things that can go wrong out of the picture

I just love the sound of the s62 and having a manual tranny will liven up the driving experience
