the parts will work. the bezel on the nav screen and the monitor module has a "step" that goes with the rest of the E46 dash, and the E53 does not have that step/ridge... so, it will look very strange... i am not sure if the bezel can be swapped or not...

otherwise, the electronics are the same, some are newer hardware/software/firmware, some are older...

Okay I wouldn't mind the step ridge though, but will I be able to screw the mount with nav onto the e53 ?

You are asking for fitment of mounting points. The nav comp in trunk is identical. The monitor... I can't tell you, as I never dealt with E46... Maybe other people can chime in

I don't think it will work. The e46 beside the shape it comes with cd drive and the e53 comes with tape. I assume it will be a conflict when the handshake takes place between the devices. The e53 bordmonitor will most likely look for the cd changer while the e46 will not know what that is. The amp might not recognize the handshake message from the e46 monitor and it will turn off. Isn't the e46 bordmonitor deeper than the e53 one? It might not be enough space for it in the x5.
I might be wrong but I guess if cd was an option for the x5 then BMW would have implemented it in the later e53 models.

Even if you somehow make it fit, the viewing angle on E46 M3 for nav is different from E53 X5 and that will make it difficult to see in X5. I have read here in past where a member used E39 5-series nav on E53 but viewing the screen was not good due to different viewing angle.

Is the nav system in the trunk of both cars the same? Cause I think my monitor is okay and the problem is the nav system, are they the same ? Could I use the nav system from the e46 on my e53 ?

As mentioned in post #2...the answer to most of these questions can be answered in minutes by putting the part nbr into the cross reference search on sites like realoem.com & bmwfans.info ...see examples below:
