Toyo Oh-Boyo
https://picasaweb.google.com/1153593...X5RearToeIssue
No more Toyos for me! I've been riding around in a death trap for who knows how long... At least its not the front but nevertheless. I bet this is partially due to not rotating them side to side, but seems like something might be off off with the alignment., Passenger rear is wearing on the inside too but not nearly as bad (the tread is not separating at least). Fronts are totally fine. I probably didn't have them at "optimal" pressure all the time either (might get some kind of aftermarket tire pressure monitor system). I guess I can't complain too much - got almost 30K out of them. I think some Michelin Pilot Sport's are in my future. They are expensive, but I hear great things. I could probably keep the fronts but not sure if I want to mismatch bramds... Needless to say my plasti-dip'ing the rims project has been delayed for now until new tires are on. I'm going to put the full size spare on the driver side rear for safety reasons...

This was not caused by the tire brand, alignment is off.

Concur with TiAgX5 . 30k is plenty miles if there was a QC problem they would've corded much sooner. Since you mentioned these were the rears it must be indicative of the toe in problem? Please post alignment sheet when you get it done. Me personal wouldn't mix tire mfrs. Had Toyos on a previous truck and once they wore in couldn't stand the screeching around turns so wouldn't buy another set now.

You have way too much toe in the rear.
Has nothing to do with Toyo's, your alignment is extremely off. Considering your X is 14 years old I would start replacing lower ball joint, integral link, guiding link (straight arm), wishbone control arm in the rear so that the alignment can be brought into spec for camber. HOWEVER, you need to kill the toe down to .01 in the rear, even if your camber is within spec it does not kill the tires, having the toe in conjunction with the spec'ed camber will kill them, so unless you want to shred your new set of tires the same way, GET RID OF THE TOE IN THE REAR

![]() Tire brand has nothing to do with your problem. Your X needs an alignment to straighten toe-in.

Good stuff above... Imo, the best 'aftermarket tire pressure monitor system' is a decent pencil or digital air pressure gauge: $5 to $30 bucks. Check tp once a week or so, no problem. GL, mD

Thanks for all the input guys. Yeah I agree must be an alignment issue. One other thing I forgot to mention is that the drier side has a really slow leak in the airbag. The passenger side sags when the car sits for a while but it pumps right back up every time I start the car.
Going to get the alignment taken care of by a good shop that specializes in it. I've heard really good things about Custom Alignment in Mountain View. I'll have them mount, and laser road force balance then do a full alignment. I'm going to get a set of Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's on eBay from Group-A: Front - 276/40R20 Rear - 315/35R20 $1059 for a new set of tires sounds reasonable to me. I've heard nothing but good things about Vredesteins.

Vredsteins are good tires but don't expect a lot of life out of them, being a stiffer summer compound they wear down quicker than an A/S rated tire like the Toyos.
If you haven't done any rear suspension work you may be coming back in and letting us know that the tech can't "get it in spec" in the rear, keep us updated but please be sure to kill the toe in on the rear.

How are the newer generation of ST II's? I thought they were max performance summer tires too. I think the price is similar. I drive about 4000 miles/year in this vehicle. I got this current set in 2007 so that's been 7 years.
I do drive the car in the snow sometimes (with Spike Spiders on the rear). I'm a little hesitent to go with Toyos again because I've had a lot of issues with the fronts flat-spotting and going out of round when sitting a little while. They could never get the rear passenger side completely smooth even after 2 replacements...
