If you going thru the trouble of having a compression test, might as well go with a leak down test at the same time.

Good.

THEN have them do a leakdown test on low cylinders (if any).

Edit: upallnight beat me to it.

He beat me too!

So many owners don't know the leakdown test will show a cracked head (air escape thru coolant system), poor valve sealing (air escape thru intake/exhaust system) or poor ring/cyl seal (air escape thru crankcase).

Should I do a leak down test still?

valve seal gaskets? that's what I ended up replacing, Loss of power, smoking, loss of mileage. Done while towing a loaded trailer over the Rockies.

But I'd do the leak down test. Time to find out exactly what's going wrong. So important to have a great dealer or indie to rely on. Sounds like yours is interested in only what's good for him..., not you.

If all the cylinders have good compression a leak down test is not necessary. If a cylinder or a couple of cylinders had bad compression, a leak down test can provide some answers as to what is probably the problem. If you hear air hissing through the exhaust, then your exhaust valve is not sealing, air hissing through the intake manifold then your intake valve is not sealing and air hissing in the crankcase then the rings are not sealing.

Still waiting on Bema (dealer) to get a valve stem tool. Telling me they haven't found one yet and also don't know if it's them, me, or warranty paying for the tool. Anybody know of any place in Edmonton or Calgary that's got at least some kind of knowledge or experience with this procedure. My patience is fading.

No.

IF compression is good and even across all cylinders there are no leaks to locate.

Need to find a Canadian service place that has done valve stem seals before, I called every shop in Saskatoon that works on BMW's and nobody has a clue how to do such work.
