Had that done before the Atlanta Oktoberfest - If you have a V8, make sure they do both sides - If one is failing, the rest are also at the end of their effective lifespan.

On mine, they just did the one side, but it was back in to get the other side done the next week.

Good Luck

Just for Grins, I put the part number for the official BMW reman short engine (depends on production date, I used part number 11000427261) into the various online dealers - list is (US prices) $18k-19k but you can get it from BMW of Morristown (no affiliation/endorsement) for $12k. Would have to work out shipping with them, I guess. A decent shop should be able to switch it out for $3k in labor (~ 30 hours) and then you are within your insurance coverage.

It seems other people are encouraging you to check the condition of the engine using more testing - seems like a good idea - I would include a fiber optic inspection - most mechanics have them, and a the ACDelco unit (ARZ604, 8mm head) is small enough to pass into spark plug holes.

My 01 4.4i had the cold weather problem (CCV freezes, blows oil like crazy) which is only a few hundred dollar repair, but many people with similar experience have been told they had a blown engine, even by dealers.

Pulled heads, replaced valve stem seals. They put it back together and say my heads need to be replaced now because of something not clearing or moving(words got fuzzy after he said $10,000 for heads).

Sounds like their problem, not yours (other than the hassle). Is this a BMW Dealer or independent repair place?

They were in place before they took things apart, which they didn't need to do if they'd have bought the german auto specialties tool for valve seal repair...

If it's at the dealer, escalate to the service manager and if he/she won't take responsibility, move on to BMW Canada (I am familiar with BMW USA, I assume you have an equivalent).

But, I feel like we are missing part of the story. How did you get from scored cylinders and a new engine to valve seals?

When the compression test showed excellent compression across all 8 cylinders is my guess.

BMW dealer. Compression test is what lead to the disproving of their previous assessment that my engine was shot. That was from me scoping the cylinders myself and only seeing one scratch on one cylinder out of the 4 I had checked and then asking what they were going off of to say it was no good. There was never a single code thrown up to the time it finally went under the wrench. I'm going in tomorrow so they can explain very slowly to my why all of this is happening.
