Transmission problem, without reverse AGAIN

My 2000 X5 4.4i is again with transmission problems. I had exactly this same problem on 2008 with 150.000Km on the clock, now with 200.000Km on the clock same problem again.

If I am in a horizontal plan, it moves very very very slowly while in reverse, but if thereīs a sligh ramp it just doesnīt move at all. All the other gear work normaly, so itīs not the clucth otherwise it wouldnīt move forward too. Only the reverse gear doesnīt work and I donīt get the " Trasmission safe mode" notice on the dash. This is a very well known problem on these ZF gearboxes ! The only difference from 2008 is that in the morning where engine is cold I still have reverve and gearbox works normally, but after 20 or 30 minutes ride with engine warm, I loose the reverse !!! That is weird donīt you think?

Back on 2008 I ended up making a rebuild and thought that it could last at least another 150.000Km but only 50.000Km after the same problem is back, but on 2008 car was in Europe where thereīs assistance, now Iīm in a distant place in Africa and no assistance anywhere nearby. Have already seen some UK website to order a remanufacter gearbox, itīs the only solution any other ideia???

Hereīs my thread with failure gearbox back on 2008

Have already found a used gearbox in UK for my car, but before going for that route, do you think a change in the transmission oil can help solve the problem? I ask this because I have reverse when the car is cold and it works perfectly normal, but when hot, I can only reverse for 3 meters and then it seems the clucth disengage! Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Your reverse clutch drum serrated tooth has worn out and is smooth, this is a known problems with X5 transmissions and a few other BMW's. Options
1- get a rebuilt transmission
2- get a used transmission( with this you may have the same problem all over again)
3- try to rebuilt your self and just replace the reverse drum

The gearbox from UK is in good working conditions according to seller, anyway but I was thinking on open it and have the clutch drum replaced, new fluid and I it will be good for some more miles I believe.

Could be the plastic ball in the valve body. Do a search on Google for no reverse BMW valve body.

Could also be this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3fD-lYHpdA

upallnight thank you so muh for your links

I have been riding with my X and it has been working fine. While cold the reverse always work perfect, when hot, iw wasnīt working but I discover a to make it work. When I put reverse with hot engine, the reverse engage, and moves 3 meters and then it stops and loose the ability to move. To have reverse again, I put on "P" then on "D". I make this procedure twice, and then I put "R" again and... BINGO... I have reverse again Then for the rest of the day , no more problems reverse works perfectly!!!! It has been like this for the last three days!! Isnīt this weird?

I had the problem with my solenoids as well once the car got hot. That fixed the problem.

Did your change your solenoids and had reverse again after? Is your gearbox a ZF unit?

I put the car on a ramp and reverse it more than 20 times without any failure, it engage reverse every time and climb the ramp.
