Last night I had it parked out at Hilton Coliseum during the basketball game. After 3 hours at 7ºF it was not happy. It started up just fine, the engine in my 4.8is is sound. But the squeaky and the shaky are a tad embarrassing.

Just ordered a remanufactured transfer case. My indy should be able to put it in on Tuesday, provided it is here by then. One more week and hopefully this will all be over.

Cross your fingers for me, folks.

Just come across this thread. Very keen to see how it turns out.. My shake isn't all that bad, but it tends to happen more when the car is hot. So that has got me thinking I might have the same issue.. 115000k on the clock 2005 X5 3.0L Diesel - bought it with 112000k so still feeling it out. Time to get under the car and give it a flush.. I had a problem earlier with the car giving me a decent kick up the ass every now and again when I came to a stop. I changed the gearbox oil and it has just about eliminated it (still happens every now and again but no where near as severe) But now I've notice this shake.. I've never tinkered with a transfer case. Guess I better start learning :/
Cheers for this thread man. Pretty much pointed me to the first I should look at given the symptoms sounding pretty much identical

Welcome...I'll definitely be posting back here as I (hopefully) find my solution.

My shake is almost as if there is a fault line that extends from one front door release, through the steering wheel, across the shifter, and straight to the other door release. That's where everything comes from.

When it wasn't so bad, it would creep in slowly. The first place I could start to feel it was in my thighs, coming from the seat. As it's gotten worse, it doesn't even need the vehicle to warm up anymore, it just starts almost right away, and there's not much 'creeping in', it's almost full gun from the start.

The cold has also not improved things, which is odd considering it originally drove fine until the vehicle warmed up. Not anymore.

Tuesday looks to be the day I swap out the transfer case, so hopefully Wednesday I'll be reporting good news.

A few things you may want to check in order that I diagnosed a similar problem.
First, I had a problem with freeze up of the front caliper, causing a very serious vibration and almost bouncing while driving, disappeared during coast. Had to replace the brake line. Second, I did the motor mount check and replaced them, make sure they are fluid filled. Look for golden/oil like fluid below the mount locations before replacing. Third, a mechanic mentioned exhaust hangers and system connections. Fourth and finally fixed the rumble.shake under load, but no shake on coast or neutral roll. It was the inner CV joints on front axles left and right. Easy check, put it on lift, if there is excessive play in or out, up or down it's the inner cv shafts. One last thing, torque converter/stat may be a culprit. A bit harder to diagnose. If there is no slippage or change in shifting than it may not be a problem; check both sport shift and auto. Good luck.

Thanks for the response...
  • I've definitely ruled out the sticking caliper. I thought for sure that was going to be the culprit after reading another thread, but they check out okay.
  • If we can get replacement motor mounts in by Tuesday they're going to do that at the same time as the transfer case.
  • Exhaust hangers...I hadn't heard that suggestion before.
  • CV joints are definitely something I've considered as well, but my mechanic thinks they're good. But I still wonder. I've had two other vehicles that I've had to replace them in with the same occurrence of symptoms, though I've never felt it this bad before. This will be the next thing if the transfer case doesn't solve the problem.
  • There has been zero slippage, so I'm hoping the torque converter isn't the problem.

I'm hoping that the fact that the garage saw visual evidence of the transfer case jumping around and the error code they pulled have us on the right track and the new transfer case fixes this. They saw and felt the transfer case moving in sync with the shake. We changed the TC fluid and reset adaptations. Two days later they pulled codes and there was one pointing at the transfer case.

I want to enjoy this ride for awhile. Tired of troubleshooting, time to drive.
