Keep in mind that the upper timing cover may not be seated properly and that alters the rest, while the other one can be in the right position and throw no codes.

Or do I have to open up both sides again to get it retiming? It took me over 30+ hours to get it completed. It's a pain to go thru the whole thing again. Is there a way to tell if the code go away after the retiming before putting all the parts together? Thanks

You using the right tools? With the right timing tools and following the procedure, it's pretty much guaranteed to work.

Yes, I purchased the complete m62 tool set from ebay for $300. See link below. I just retiming the engine again...everything run smooth and idle good. But the engine light still on for p0021. Did I miss something here? Could the vanos solenoid cause the p0021 as well? Can the solenoid be swap from bank 1 to bank 2? I need the p0021 gone to pass the emission test. Thanks

I have a complete set off eBay too and yet I have the codes.
People reported that using this they were able to get rid of the codes.
G.A.S. BMW M62tu Professional Cam Tool Kit
Some changed the Vanos solenoids and had the codes gone after that.
I think that in every single case you have too many variables that it would be really difficult to apply somebody's experience on yourself.
Given that the code is set by getting reading fro only 3 sensors( two camshaft and one crankshaft) that means that it really comes to properly adjusting you bank 2's timing plate.
That's my opinion.
Now,to do that properly, due to PITA tolerances reported by other guys here and on the other forums,I think, you would need to lock all the camshafts.
Correct me if I am wrong, because I am to do that myself next summer.

I just found this useful thread from Scott. I'll try to open the bank 2 and move the plate sensor .06 degree clockwise to see if the code go away. I think the tool set for the jigs might off a little when lock down the plate sensor. Will see what happen.

I just put everything back this evening. So far no code show up yet after 20 miles test drive. Now I have to deal with the "the suspension inact" msg and no radio power. Found water on the battery compartment. The radio module could be bad with soak in water and also the air suspension sensor as well. I didn't not touch the vanos units. Just did the chain rail guides and all other parts in there. If you need the tools. I can loan out for $50+shipping (I also have custom made crank bolt holder tool and fan clutch wrench). Took me three times to set the timing....easy step but somehow it hard to get it right at the first try.
