Tdog, Dose BMW in San Diego is who I was thinking of - Dose BMW Service Repair San Diego And El Cajon - Dose Independent BMW Service San Diego And El Cajon (619) 449-3835
More in my area, there is a shop north of Atlanta that specializes in european [mostly ZFs] that might be a good place to diagnose.

6 Speed oil change kit BMW

As most people have already responded, a starting point is to have a trusted BMW indy take a look, pull any codes, reset the adapter data, and double check the trans fluid levels FIRST. BMW considers a trans fluid "lifetime Fill" which has been translated to mean "life of trans". It died, then that was it's life...so sorry. Low trans fluid levels, clogged filters will provide a multitude of symptoms, some that you described.

One recommendation I would offer, is to service the trans as mentioned (filter, fluid, - pan if necessary, and the wiring seal above the valve body.
Part Number 1 on image below. See Penske Parts Penske Parts - Technical Diagrams - E53 X5 4.4i (N62) SAV
24347588725 SEALING SLEEVE $20.08 Before I would jump to any conclusions on the status of a BMW trans, as multiple people report 80-90% resolution on this process.

Keep in mind the PO may have had this issue and bailed so check the down stream affects on drive shaft guibo and mounts as you do a deeper inspection.

Please report back your steps and possible resolution so other may learn as well. Gee, I think that is why we are on the forum....sorry

So, just tried to recreate the issue in "automatic SPORT" mode, AND "manual SPORT mode" and this doesn't happen in either of those.... ??? So, it just happens in the regular drive mode. So weird.

Do you also get a "slow creep kick"? Like if you're rolling through a parking-lot slowly it'll grab 2nd gear with a "thunk"?

I know the reason I keep doing it and I know the process and
what it accomplishes. Fact is after the procedure it takes a long
while for the problem to resurface. 6 months or more.
In my view it's a cheap price to pay to solve an unsolvable problem.

Once re-learnt then the problem is back. The tranny is readjusting these values anyway. That's the reason you have to keep doing it...

Usually only at a rolling stop and go when you don't stop all the way. If get to a complete stop it doesn't happen.

That's the same problem I had with mine. You know when it's gonna happen - you get a feel for it. The engine revs a bit then "whack"!

I asked a local bmw shop to bump the transmission control software up to the latest version maybe 25,000 miles ago - it really helped the problem for me. It hardly ever happens anymore.....

I probably need to check the fluid in mine though - I've never done that and I've had it since 73k - it's got 111k on it now.

First of all, welcome! We're here to help each other, and show off our X's, from time to time! I get a very slight kick from 2nd to 1st when coming to stop, not always but most of the time. Talked with my Indy, and he suggested checking fluid levels first, and also a software update. Mine isn't bad enough for my wife to notice, but I can tell. These to things are on my to-do list. I've heard quite a few positive reports after software updates...

Where would one get a software update aside from the dealer?
