Can u even get steel wheel in such sizes?

Agree...'form follows function'. A dark, heavy wheel- even steel- that has mass (and not thin, chrome spokes) would say "these wheels and tires mean business" (and that business is connecting large, aggressive tires to rough, coarse terrain to transmit power and establish control)

Chrome rims with thin spokes basically say "please dont let them break me"

Largest off-road style steel wheels I’ve seen are 17”, which won’t clear the brakes.

Correct, 5x120. Also watch out for hub bore diameter. It needs to be 74.1mm.

the middle picture worries me most...is tire not rubbing against the upper suspension arm? any imbalancing of the tire and it could be severe rubbing...it seems and in winter (I am thinking of 265/50R20 blizzaks) I am afraid the snow will be hampering wheel rotation... hm... can u shed more light on how it performs in practice? just from a safety perspective...is it remotely possible that tire gets torn by the upper suspension arm in the below photo?

I used 18" 7 series wheels with a 24mm offset (pushes them out 24mm from stock to clear) but they had the 72.56 hub bore and I had the local shop bore them out to 74.1 ($40 each).

e39 5 series wheels would likely fit as they have a 74mm hub and the right offset but they are mostly 5 spoke wheels (style 69, etc) and don't look that strong and a broken wheel just isn't a good thing... Car manufacturers are usually conservative but the lighter versions of the e39 are literally a ton lighter than the e70 (3300lbs vs 5300lbs) so that is pushing it...

The e65 on the other hand is about 4500lbs so that is more like 200lbs/wheel instead of 400lbs/wheel of difference and there are several unpopular (cheap) 6+ spoke 7 series wheels out there. Mine are style 93. They wouldn't be great on a car given that there are lighter options but on the x5 they work well.

They are lightly close due to the offset. I have the same diameter tire on mine with more room than that (assuming it doesn't just look closer due to the camera angle). With a 24mm offset 30.5" diameter 265mm tires are safe.

They do rub on the oil cooler grille on the 4.8i though so that has to be dealt with if you have a 4.8i.
