Whistle Need advice on keeping/selling 2010 X5d

Hi All,

I bought my 2010 X5d with Premium, Technology and Cold Weather package as a CPO with 35k miles on it back in Jan 2013 for a very reasonable $36k. I now have 72k miles on the odometer. This is my first BMW after only ever having owned Japanese/Korean cars. I've had the car for 3 years now. Love it to death. Makes me smile like a Cheshire Cat every single time I get behind the wheel. Love the diesel growl and the gobs of torque and the BMW handling. I love the car so much that I want to keep it till the wheels fall off. I understand that the X5 will require regular maintenance and expenses, more so than a Japanese car. But I'm worried for two reasons.

1. BMW doesn't have a posted maintenance schedule that I can follow outside of the Condition Based Service based on the computer if I choose to keep my car beyond 100k miles. I've tried to change oil every 6k miles instead of waiting for the computer. But am lost when it comes to the recommended intervals for Transmission Fluid changes and other preventive maintenance. Is there a source for this? I've scoured google and only found something related to the 3 series car and most of information in this document does not apply to a diesel X5.

2. Many people seem to post here only when they have major issues with their X5. So it is tough to get an idea of whether my X5 a good car with minimum issues or one which one could be troublesome in the long run. So I'm listing the stuff that has required warranty work (through original warranty and subsequently CPO) in the hopes of getting some insight from the other members on whether this is par for the course. Because the other option I have is to sell/trade this in and get another 2013 X5 for $34-39k.

1. 22000 miles (Adaptive Headlight Modules replaced by previous owner under warranty)
2. 27000 miles (External Temperature Sensor replaced by previous owner under warranty)
3. 36000 miles (Rear hatch adjusted after I complained about rattle and trim pieces replaced rear driver side in the C-pillar under warranty. Also had trim pieces near the iDrive controller and Steering wheel and driver door replaced due to excessive wear/rubberized smooth touch coating peeling all under warranty)
4. 39000 miles (EGR Valve replaced due to diesel smell in cabin by dealer under original warranty. First repair after I purchased the car)
5. 47000 miles (Power Steering Pump replaced due to noise made by steering during turns when on a roadtrip. Replaced under warranty by dealer)
6. 66000 miles (Parking brake malfunction. EMF module replaced under CPO warranty. Paid $50 out of pocket. Was told original cost was around $1800 at dealer and around $1200 at Indy if I didn't have warranty)
7. 68000 miles Started noticing a Whistling Noise coming from engine when accelerating. Usually between 1500-2000 RPM. Sounded like it was coming from the Turbo or one of the hoses. Also noticed lurching on the transmission when in low gears in bumper to bumper traffic. Took it to Dealer and Indy and they couldn't diagnose/reproduce.
8. 71000 miles Started noticing that the car would give intermittent Excessive Battery Drain messages in the morning when I left for work. Checked battery and it seemed fine. Also started getting weird electronic gremlins like Alarm going off when I open the rear hatch and Door open message coming on when driving on the freeway. I also noticed that car would not go to sleep when parked in garage and the iDrive controller would keep lighting up and going back to sleep. Took it to Dealer who could not reproduce.
9. 71500 miles (Left the car at the Independent Mechanic I use for 3 days so he could keep the car overnight and troubleshoot. He finally identified that it could be a problem with the DME Controller Module/ECU that is causing timing issue with the turbo hence causing the whistle. This he felt could be related/connected to the transmission lurching problem. He also thought that the Footwell module could be faulty causing the electrical gremlins. Took it back to the Dealer and spoke to the Shop Foreman and asked if this could be the issue. They said they would diagnose it themselves and thankfully ended up replacing the DME and the Footwell FRM module along with the necessary coding and software updates covered under CPO. I only had to pay $50 out of pocket. Although I was told that this would have been about $4000 out of pocket if I didn't have the CPO)

Now, I've had the car back from the dealership only for 2 days. The whistling issue is gone and cannot reproduce the electrical issues or the transmission lurching. But now with our first baby on the way I'm wondering if this is par for the course and if I should keep the car with some money set aside for future repairs or if would it be better to sell/trade in the car and get a 2013 X5d with lower miles?

The X5 is my daily driver since last year and I put about 20k miles on it in the last year alone. I have 31 months of payments left on the car (In the middle of the 60 month loan) and would probably be around 130k by the time the car is paid off. I usually keep my cars till the wheels fall off but all my other cars have been Japanese/Korean cars.

Based on reading the forum, I see the major issues are with the temperature sensor in the SCR tank and the Diesel Particulate Filter which costs almost $5k. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Thoughts/Suggestions from members that have been there and done that would be much appreciated.

DPF and that whole clean diesel is a major pain once things start happening. A bad thermostat leads to a clogged DPF quicker so see what your coolant temps are at while on he highway, should be around 85-88 degrees i believe. Anything under 75 is bad thermostat.
There are ways to eliminate the DPF and Urea injection with a tune for around $2000 if you wanted to keep the x5. I read after 100k, trans fluid change is definitely needed.
Mine is a 2011 35d with almost 110k on it.

Thanks Ozer. I'm not so sure about the tune to remove the exhaust components given that I'm in California and all the required smog checks. Did you have to/end up doing any preventive maintenance between 85-100k? Like Waterpump, Turbo, EGR valves etc? How long do you plan on keeping the car for? I'm hoping to take mine to 150k. given that I drive about 20k a year that will be 4 more years and at least 1 year after the truck is paid off.

No worries for the OP
Also, he wont be able to remove the emission systems.

With a baby on the way, you'll have many things to worry about. Your car should be your last problem. Imagine being stranded in the middle of nowhere with the kid/s on the back seat. And even if you don't end up stranded, you'll probably flinch at every unusual sound the car makes.
Ten years ago I bought my first X5 out of warranty (one kid at the time). Even the low outside temperature gong would almost give me a heart attack. I was constantly monitoring the cluster.
Most likely your car comes with a 6 year CPO (mine does). As I understand there is a seven year CPO which covers whatever your regular CPO covers plus radio, CD and navigation. If you're interested in keeping it that long (still 100k covered) you might want to ask your dealer how much would cost you the extra year. You already paid for the 6Y/CPO.
Good luck with your baby. The first 18 years are difficult. After that, everything is piece of cake.

Ha Ha, nicely put Youry! Thankfully the X5 hasn't left me stranded anywhere so far. But after two issues that popped up right after long road trips, I definitely stopped taking the X5 for long trip outside of my daily commute. My car comes out of CPO end of Jan. I don't think the 7 year warranty would do much. I did look at Route66 that has the 48k mile/4 years warranty for my car for $3200. At the rate I'm putting on miles it would probably last only for about 26-28 months. I'm seriously leaning towards getting rid of the car and getting something else. Maybe a newer X5.

I bought mine at 102k miles, right out of the 100k extended warranty the first owner got. I had to deal with some issues right away, turned out to be a MAF sensor and air temp sensor. Got the DEF temperature sensor lights for about a month then they disappeared, not sure what happened there. Low temperature "ding" makes me jump each time, i want to keep mine for a long time but i also need a reliable family vehicle. Mine is up for sale in my local craigslist, in case someone wants to buy it, till then i keep on driving it.

As far as i can see from extensive service history records i have for mine, water pump is original, not many things have been changed besides the usuals: EGR cooler, axle, couple small electronic modules and so on.

With a baby on the way, get something very reliable... I suggest you go to Honda or something like that. You can't afford to be stranded with an infant.

I almost bought a 2011 acura MDX, I should have gotten that. If i sell my x5, thats what i would be getting. Look into them, very reliable and nice looking. They get avg 20mpg though.

Just to update the group. I picked up a damn good lease on the 2015 Sonata 2.0 Turbo Limited for 0 down and $253 a month for 3yr/45k miles. The car has Full Range Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Start, Lane Keep Assist, Memory seats, Auto dimming rear view mirror, Auto trunk open (In 3 seconds after you walk up to the trunk), Comfort Access Keyless Entry and Keyless Start, Bluelink telematics system that includes Send to car nav from Google Maps, Remote start, Remote door lock/unlock, Geo Fencing and Speed Limiter (similar to BMW Assist), Wifi in car, Lane Change Assist, Heated and Ventilated seats, Dual Zone automatic climate control, Panoramic sunroof, heated rear seats 12 speaker 600watt Harmon/Kardon(Infinity) sound system, Carplay and Android Auto, Leather seats, Rear Passenger Manual side sun shades, HID Xenon lights, Automatic High Beams, rear view camera with park assist and so many other features that I probably haven't explored yet. It also has a 16.3 cubic feet trunk that is ginormous. probably enough to swallow all that baby gear and the back seat is roomy enough (Car is classified as Full Size) for the rear facing car seat. Car has 5 star crash test and safety ratings.

That said, I also have the option to purchase the Route 66 extended warranty on the X5. $3200 including the electronics and Diesel coverage which I confirmed covers the emissions system (including SCR system and the Diesel Particulate Filter).

So the plan is for the Sonata to become the family car for long trips where I cannot afford being stranded. The X5 with the warranty becomes the in town hauler/my fun car/family car when we have her/my parents traveling with us along with the baby. Now to make the decision on whether to pull the trigger on that Route 66 warranty or to just sock away $3200 in the bank and use it for future repairs if and when they occur? Btw, the warranty covers until Dec 2019 or 120,400 miles whichever comes first and given that I will start putting the miles on the Sonata, the X5 will not accumulate as many miles as it does today.

I also have the X5 listed on craigslist just in case I get a good offer on it. Carmax gave me an offer for $19800. Local dealer trade-in quotes range from 17.5-19k. Can't make up my mind

Thoughts?
