I just posted this question in another post...How important is your X5 to you? 1 being (you don't care if it goes) and 10 being (I really like it and want to keep it) If you are close to "10", then just keep it and use it as an "in the city family hauler" like you intend on...just my 2 cents...Keep in mind, they are not rare vehicles by any means and even if you do get rid of it, you can always find another one...

^^^+1.
With these cars, if one is reluctant to keep it or not, my advice will be get rid of it. If one needs transportation and budget is a factor BMW is not for them(at least not a modern one).
For me, every $1000 (this is $1 in boat dollars, or BMW dollars ) is justified. Never had any regrets, ever.

Great to find my very same question being asked. I am 93k miles toward the 100k/ 7 year extended warranty expiration, and just not sure if I have reliable long term service expectations, especially from a first year US model diesel. I love the X5 overall, and the diesel mileage. But I tow a 5000lb/2200kg travel trailer as well - and would hate to have a vacation breakdown, with caravan in tow. It does the pulling job very well, but has also had two long distance, unexpected service needed, interrupted journeys without trailer.

Also, just got the active DEF tank temp sensor CEL recurring. Shop estimated about a US $1k repair, to replace the whole tank. So just curse the DEF system like most diesel owners, and then carry on?

Just to respond, I ended up selling the car to a private party for $20,700. Thanks for this input Pierce330. After reading your response, I looked at Autotrader and the X5 Diesels are dime a dozen. I figured that if and when I wanted to get back in to an X5, I'd buy one at that time. No need to feel like I need to keep this car. Thanks for your valuable input! Definitely helped me out!

I get what you are trying to say. To me, it has never been about the money per se. The purchase of the BMW was not intended to be a sensible one in any way or fashion. The diesel X is the only car that I've had so far that has put a smile on my face every single time I drove it. I like to baby my cars and subconsciously listen to every single sound coming out of the engine truly keeping tabs on the car and performing required fixes before it becomes a bigger repair. But I think with the baby on the way I figured that my attention and energy was better spent elsewhere. The car is the last thing that I want to be thinking about when the baby comes. I love the Loaded Sonata for that. Its a perfect baby mobile with all the creature comforts that were once the exclusive domain of luxury cars and being a new car I don't have to worry about any maintenance/warranty visits and focus my full attention on my kid as I should be doing.

You may have seen my post about me getting out of mine.

For me, it wasn't a money decision. I just dropped over $5k into getting a new rear differential and axles and another $500 for the coolant reservoir. What broke me was when I was getting prepared to drive to DC with the family, I turned to the wife and said "Are you sure we don't want to take your Jeep? I am scared that this car won't get us there and back". That's just a bad feeling to have. Like others had mentioned, any ding on the cluster would cause my heart to drop. I simply had ZERO faith in the car, so it was time for me to get out.

With you having kids on the way, I've been there broken down with my two boys waiting for BMW Assist to send a truck. It's not fun.

I have a Tundra truck for anything that is more than two hour drive..... So far no repairs, just maintenance. I did the timing belt and w. pmp at 105k miles preventively. Replaced some hoses, belt and rollers at the time as well. Over the years I drain/filled the trans (liquid comes out almost as clean as it goes in) and replaced diff fluid several times.

Two weeks ago (at140k) the secondary air injection pump failed and the debris clogged the valves between the SAIP and the exhaust manifold. Lowest quoted number on forums to repair $2400. The darn system is under the enormous intake manifold. (No idea why they put it there, you can park a small SUV in the engine bay...) Took the intake off, cleaned the three valves out and replaced the SAIP and hoses at a cost of about $300.

If an aging X5 scares you, better buy a new one or a Highlander ;-)

Right, the point of me posting here was to figure out if my X5 was below average/average or above average in terms of the issues I have had. My strong belief is that the kind of issues a car has in the first 50-60k of its life will be a pretty good indicator of its longer term reliability and it does look like your car had few issues if any in its life. So good for you! I'm not afraid of the maintenance I'd have to perform. I just chose to not deal with that when I have a bigger responsibility with a baby. Not sure if you have kids or where you are in your life. But everyone's priority changes with time.

Hmmm. Emotionally I can see this. Not sure there is a body of data to support this....

IMO, it depends on the 'issue' and if they really are fixed down to the root causes.
