I did everything from the top. On one of the bolts I couldn't get it on straight but enough to break it loose and get it out.

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you need step by steps for this, you're probably not cut out for this job. I certainly wasn't. Ended up having the truck towed to the dealer because of those two bolts.

I hear you, but what i am looking for is the order in which this should be handled. I have had a lot of success working on my BMWs in the past with the help of these forums and I believe this is a fairly simple repair. So any information pertaining to which items will need to be removed to make this easier (expansion tank, power steering reservoir, etc.) and the angle of attack is the information that I am looking for.

don't need a step by step.

just some hints and info to make the job faster, easier.

such as what needs removal, angle of attack to the bolts that are difficult to access etc.

Check wsmeyer's posts for a step by step. I think he lists them in another thread. Expansion tank and power steering reservoir do not need to be removed.

It will come down to this: the two bottom bolts on the oil thermostat itself. I would recommend using a flexible extension about 12" long for them. That's what my dealer told me they used.

Just finished a couple hours ago, shes running like a charm with no more leaking (pouring) oil. Cost about $5 for the gasket and then maybe $30 for oil. DiY worth the time.

1/4in drive E10 socket should be considered a must have for this job. otherwise you will spent alot of frustration r/r those two lower bolts

i just brought 2007 X5 4.8i & found out rear seal is leaking. its under 3 month warranty & second time taking the car back for the same thing, the salesman told me it was something else like filter loose. My mechanic gave it a service today & spotted the oil leak. first BMW X5 I have owned I hope I don't regret it. best car ever owned was a Honda s2000 I cant compare it being different but was bullet proof in maintenance.
