Trans fluid and filter replace - causing all kinds of problems! HELP!

So I just did a round of maintenance on my 07' X5 4.8L... Engine oil, coolant, brake pads, AND... transmission fluid and filter...

Car jacked up in the air on jack stands and perfectly level front to back, side to side...

Removed the splash shield

drained transmission fluid through plastic drain bolt

removed the old filter

followed the instructions on the new filter, put some fluid on the o-ring on the filler neck. carefully placed the new filter back onto the bottom of the trans and hand tightened the bolts.

Went in the proper sequence of tightening the bolts until everything was fully re-assembled.

using a fluid pump, I used ZF lifeguard fluid until it started to overflow from the fill hole.

tightened the fill bolt. put the wheels back on, dropped her back onto the ground and started her up. Runs fine.

THE PROBLEM - when I put the car in reverse to back it out of the garage, it sits for a second and puts itself back in park. Tried again, happened again...

Try a 3rd time and it stays in reverse.. hmm ok... start to back out of my garage and all of a sudden i hear a loud fast clicking noise. like really loud... like metal smacking together. and the car puts itself back in park. I shut it off.

At this point i"m getting on here to figure out what I F'd up... please give me good news...

UPDATE: Just tried to back it down the driveway again and got to the end of the driveway and reverse isnt working... It's still in reverse but gassing it just revs the engine... WTF... put it back in drive and it goes up the driveway fine but then acts like it slipping as I pull it in the garage.. How did I just destroy my transmission by changing the filter and fluid?

You don't mention running the engine while you filled the transmission? Maybe you did but, if not, then it is under filled.

And the temperature should not exceed 40 degrees Celsius while filling. Also the gears should be cycled during the filling process with the AC on. A lot of things to watch out for.

I did not do either of those things...

I have no idea what DIY I found and followed but it said that it was "really easy" and simply, drain, replace filter, refill and drive.

I re-checked the fluid, and low and behold, it was a little low. topped it off and took it for a spin. Seems like it driving fine now. No noises or anything. Its actually shifting significantly smoother now. Hopefully I didnt cause any damage. The noise it first made has me worried though...

Thanks you guys, I about had a heart attack when I was having the issue. I'm just trying to take care of my baby and do preventative maintenance. Obviously I wasn't careful enough. I'm going to drive it around this week and do the trans fluid replacement again next weekend to try and get more of the old fluid from other parts of the trans out.

Hmm. I replied in the other thread.... There are DIYs posted here and on Bimmerfest...how DID you miss the 'needs to be running' part?

Good on you for doing a 2x drain and fill- the ATF level between the two isnt that critical. When I did it, I drove 25 miles and it was probably a half L low. No big deal. Then I drained and did a refill trying to get it exact. PITA as the trans gets hot quickly....

To the OP, you need to turn the A/C on, high temp low speed, fill it up until overflow, then P-R-N-D-N-R-P and repeat. Do it about 7~8 times, and now fill it with TF again. Then repeat the whole process again. You have to make sure the fluid temp is between 30C to 40C (just use laser measures), and it barely overflow.

Good luck!~
