Must be a Canada thing.

Basically all used cars in the US are "as is" with the narrow exception of cars still under the new car warranty or cars under a CPO or add on warranty.

When it comes to fixing things, few shops have better knowledge or can fix a BMW cheaper than a BMW shop. Dings and paint scratches are kind of an exception, since it is $500 to fix a panel, hood or bumper, minimum. But to toss in an I drive controller, a dealer pays $150 for the part and 10 minutes to install it. Easy peasy.

Good news for OP is it is not the V8...

I never considered it could be anything else?

I did want the 4.8l but knew enough to stay away!

I was looking for a 2011 3.5d when I found this one and thought I would take a chance on it.

OP You've got a fantastic vehicle. The 3.0 is far more dependable than the V8 and a lot less needy. If taken care of properly, it will provide you with years of service. Remember though it is a first year production of a BMW and it will be prone to an ass ton of first year production woes that are unfortunately model year specific. This forum will be a great resource for you when you are beating your head up against a brick wall. Congrats on your purchase.

My indy recommends I replace the valve cover as well as the gasket because these covers are known to warp ?
As anyone heard of this?
