yet another extended warranty thread

I recently bought a 2011 E70 (sport, diesel, 3rd row) as a tow vehicle for my trailer. It was sold by, maintained at, and then traded back to the same BMW dealer (Peake in Kenner, LA). The dealer gave me the complete maint/repair records, and it has already had most of the notorious E70 issues repaired and SB updates applied (EGR system, driveshaft, CA system, HVAC control panel, SCR mixer, Idler pulley, SCR active tank, throttle body, air-springs, battery, passenger seat sensor, etc. ) There was a major repair once every 15k miles (all covered under orig/extended BMW warranty). No surprise that the PO traded it in immediately after the BMW extended warranty ended.

So, while most of the big failures have already happened, it does have high miles (72k), so I went shopping for an extended service plan:

  • Route 66 - not available for us, as you guys already know. I had one on my E60, and it was excellent other than they refused to pay the local dealer's labor rate of $150/hour. Even using a good independent at $90/hour, R66 paid close to 3x what it cost to buy. No wonder they don't cover BMW's anymore.
  • Carchex: $6800 for 3yr/45kmiles. Whew!
  • CNA (via local Nissan dealer): $3800 for 3yrs/36kmiles. He told me he would skip the warranty and budget for 2 big repairs.
  • Delta Auto Protect: $2500 for 5yrs/60kmiles
Despite their poor reputation, the Delta quote seems irresistably cheap and it covers more (excludes less) than anyone else. Seems too good to be true, right?
Has anyone had good experiences with Delta Auto Protect?

it would be nice to have a good list of aftermarket warranty here on the forum. I was hoping route 66 would still do X5s but I assume this is a definite no by now.

Looking forward to read replies.

Every one has a long list of complaints on ripoff alert and local BBB's.

I had R66, and was 98% happy. They refused to pay dealer labor ($145), but we're ok with my Indy ($90). When my e60 steering rack failed at 90k miles, I had no prob when R66 insisted on a rebuilt/reconditioned rack versus new. Given the price of the contract (1/3rd of the dealer's) I thought this was reasonable.

I went wit Delta this time and assume they'll only be good on a few biggies. And I realize I need to keep meticulous records and will use the most aggressive service schedule. None of these companies are going to make everyone happy and I'm sure all will be less cooperative if your car turns out to be a lemon like my E60. Truth be told, despite being a BMW driver since the 1970's I would NOT have bought an X5 if I could've found a W164 bluetec with airmatic. Our ML's have been remarkably reliable (we have driven them all to 150k miles without any major system failures). I still own and love BMW sports and classics, but as utilitarian vehicles for long term ownership the new ones are pure junk. I've had every 5 series starting with the E3 (skipped the e12), and the last reliable one was a 1995 e34 sport 6spd). I understand the 3-series are still great long term cars...

Currently shopping around 2012/13 E70 + extended warranty. Hope folks chime in with opinions. I can use it too.

1. Warranty availability varies by state.

2. Warranty availability varies over time

3. Now that most E70s are getting out of factory warranty, the pool of companies that write good policies for uncovered cars is very, very small

It is my opinion that extended warranties sold by reputable dealers are probably the best in terms of service and coverage, but also the most expensive. I would trust my local BMW dealer, as well as the local Mercedes/Jaguar/Audi dealers. I would also trust my local Toyota dealer (who sells CNA, but the cost was too high). These dealers all have reputations to protect and are judged by the national Brand organizations based on how happy they make the customer.

Of the reviews I've seen, CNA seems like the most reputable. But the cheapest I've found for a CNA policy was $3800. You might be able to find it cheaper because there's a huge dealer markup involved. If you pursue this, I would consider going straight into the dealer's finance office and be up front with the fiance guy/gal, (1) you are interested in a CNA extended warranty (2) you are not buying a car there. Keep 2 arguments to use after you get an initial quote (3) point #2 means the dealer doesn't need to use the warranty price to make up for a discount given on a car sale (4) the warranty provides pure profit for the dealership because once sold you will be dealing directly with CNA.

That's essentially what I said at a local dealer (I met with the finance manager, who has the authority to consider the big picture). He acknowledged my points, showed me the normal sales quote they'd give everyone and offered to knock $1000 off. I'm pretty sure there was another 3-400 additional discount to be had after a little more negotiation. But it was still half the coverage and 50% more $ compared to Delta AutoProtect. I would have gone with CNA for $3600 if it had the same 5yr/60k mile coverage as Delta (eg $50/month). But I thought that would be impossible so I just thanked the guy for the quote and left.

Thanks bfeng. I have never thought of using these tactics for extended warranty. Very useful.

it is quite amazing that we have to make so much research to give our money away to these warranty companies. the market is so opaque, it feels like the internat age has not mad a ding in that industry...
If one can recommend a place to buy a good warranty I am all game.
I personally got ridiculous quote from my BMW dealership...

See both attachments... $10k for 3 years and the list of exclusion for the best plan is pretty long .. and generic...
