Oil usage

I recently had to have a new engine installed in my X5 per the beaker ship. I have noticed that my oil level has been slowly creeping lower and lower. It is now showing to be just above half full. I discussed this with the dealership service department and they said that it is normal for the turbos to use some oil. What is everyone else's opinion and is what they are telling me accurate? It doesn't sound right to me, but this is the first turbo engine I've owned..

Well Joey.... you were here in May, "I need a new engine"

https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ml#post1109112

We told you that you MIGHT be getting hosed.

You disappeared, never answering any questions, not providing any details, NOT GIVING US ANYTHING TO HELP YOU.

Two months later you are back. I am guessing you paid the 'breaker ship' (aka dealership)???

Hey, why ask us? If the dealer says its normal for a car to need a new motor after they work on it, and you say "OK", why ask about oil use?

Harsh, but when folks cant even close the loop on their own issues, why should members take their time?

Ard, that is HARSH. So I didn't provide as many details as you may have liked about my engine failure. I was in a bind and doing the best I could and the most I was getting was, "sounds like you're getting screwed, or take it to another shop or call BMW America". I think one member may have asked for more details, which I didn't have or couldn't prove that the dealership did something wrong either way! I did talk with a lawyer who told me what I was already thinking, that without proof there was nothing I could do. So I contacted the owner of the dealership and they meet me over half way on the cost of the new engine. I felt it was the best I was going to get so I went with it seeing that my wife needs the car for work. I hope this satisfies your curiosity and makes up for the loss of your precious time and stress of worrying about my issue! There are also other circumstances sometimes in people's lives that may cause them to react in particular ways that you may not be privy to, such as health issues! So I would keep your future lectures off this community. If you don't want to help DON'T, but don't hurt! That being said, have a nice day.

Yes BMW considers oil usage normal. My 4.8 engine uses oil, I'm not happy that it does, but it's not excessive so I'll agree it's "normal".

Since you provided zero stats, I can't say right away if it's normal. If you're down to halfway in 100 miles, not normal. Halfway in 3k, that's normal. I'm on pace for a quart per 5k, mainly city driving.

BMW considers something ridiculous like a quart per 600 miles normal, and I think that's for NA. Turbos may consume more. If you actually got a new engine, oil usage will be higher as everything settles in. If it's rebuilt, and your oil usage is too high, then something may be suspect.

he has a point tho. you expect troubleshooting assistance without providing any kind of info on the vehicle in question, other than the fact that it's a turbo. try being at least a little forthcoming and helpful if you are asking for free advice.

Nannie Poo, thanks for the info. I just checked the mileage as I wasn't sure how many miles had been put on the car since the install of the new engine. It has been approximately 6,000. After reading your post, I feel more at ease about it now. I am not a mechanic and to those who have been a bit snide, I thought this forum was for all owners regardless of experience or lack thereof. I do apologize for my lack of knowledge and I shouldn't have posted at night without having enough to go by. In the further I'll try to do enough to live up to others expectations.

It's good camaraderie to report back with feedback on issues that people chipped in to help figure out. that way not just one person benefits from the community effort but possibly hundreds off people who will read this in the future will make good use of it.

and being 'not a mechanic' prevents you from giving out info on what vehicle you drive or its mileage?

there's one turbo 6cyl petrol, two turbo 8cyl petrol and a whole bunch of turbodiesels. they all have their unique characteristics and what's normal for the n/a V8s isn't guaranteed to be normal for the turbodiesels. that's why it's common practice to provide model year, model and mileage when asking for help. we're hardly being snide here.

Well it is my mistake that I thought I was posting in a particular subsection of the Xoupost website and didn't realize I didn't have to give that info over again! I went under the category of my year model, and I know (as I have already admitted) that I didn't give as much info as I should have! My mistake. I didn't realize I was going to get attacked! I can assure you this will be the last time I ask for any more help!!!

i can assure you with this attitude you'll likely won't get a lot of help here either.

no idea what your expectations in this forum are. we're not clairvoyant BMW gurus handing out *free* advice for the love of it, you know, none of us get paid for this. there's a minimum of information anyone asking for help is required to provide. you will find that a lot of members post their vehicle details in their signatures. others put it into their profile and most open their threads by stating the details of the vehicle they're asking about, for example, a 2008 4.8i with 110,000 miles on the clock. simple.

when you first phoned your indy garage and they asked you what car you drive, did you reply "a red one"? really not surprised they shafted you.

FYI: after looking through your profile, like it's *my* job to look up them details, i figured you drive a 2012 model. that could be a 35i, 35d, 50i or an M. how are we supposed to know which it is?
