X35D transmission rebuild or what?

I have a 2009 x35D with 122,000 miles. Since I bought it, it has had an irritating issue when compared to my previous E53.

When I roll up to an intersection and want to proceed without coming to a complete stop, it seems to not engage. I wouldn't call it slipping. I just feels like it's waiting for RPM's before it kicks in. Once I get to an adequate RPM level it takes off. (reminds me of a centrifugal clutch on a belt-drive go-cart or snowmobile) If I come to a complete stop and then engage, it seems to be fine. It's only if the car doesn't completely stop.

It's not a new behavior but seems to have become a bit more pronounced over the 75,000 miles I've driven it. I changed fluid at 55K miles and then fluid and filter at 115K. I had the square rubber piece between the valve body replaced during that time also just because I was there. Same result. Programming is up to date.

Periodically when I park on a slight incline, the vehicle will roll slightly after the engine is shut off and the brake is released. I assume a solenoid sticks but not sure.

I'm curious of several things:

1. Should I just replace the valve body / solenoids and see what happens (I hate to spend that much money only to find it's a transmission issue)
2. Has anyone found a good outlet for a reman transmission?
3. What would you suggest since a new transmission and install is roughly what the car is worth? I love the car and the 30MPG I get. I'd just like to figure out this annoying issue.

What fluid did you use for the changes?

Try adding 1/2 qt more fluid, since it's not hard to do on our x5 and see if that changes behavior. The filing procedure is problematic and Ford truck guys with a version of the same trans saw that a slight overfill fixes some issues.

It helped me when I had odd shifting issues after my last change. I think its very hard to get the pan perfectly level like zf expects it to be, plus mounts sag when they age, so who knows what is "perfect level" expected.

You have a local transmission shop with ZF rebuild experience? Id talk to them. NOT a BMW shop

Go get a newer lower mileage 35d and now you have a parts car that can be quite valuable to yourself.

If you do want to keep it on the road, do an exhaustive inspection of what is likely to come up in the next 15-20k miles before committing to rebuilding the trans. bummer to rebuild the transmission if you have another $7k coming in the next year.

I would look into the less expensive things within the trans if you can make some educated guesses, also the transmissions trade around 1800-2000 from recyclers which could be a good solution.

Before spending (or possibly wasting) your hard earned $$, go to a dealer and let them check if s/w needs to be updated.

I'm not sure you have a problem. You might try and reset adaptations and see what the transmission "learns" about how you drive. Our 2010 does the same thing- not a slip- just a lazy engage. It done it since we got it at 29k miles- now at 90k.

For the second issue- are you setting the parking brake? Reason I ask is ours has the same lurch from time to time and I believe it has to do with setting the parking brake before trans is in park. I read a bunch about the EMF and I remember something about the brake switch locking hydraulic when not in park and when park is engaged it engages the servo. Again- from memory a year ago.

There are sleeves in the valve body that can be replaced fairly easily with the transmission in the car. If you feel it’s a mechanical issue, that’s a cheap place to start.

Since Tuning my DDE, I’ve had much better low speed drivability with the D. I used to notice a major lag like you describe when exiting low speed corners in the mountains. Now that is much better. I think an xHP tune would make it even happier.

I have this same symptoms, I've attributed the "slipping" feeling to turbo lag, as for the rolling when you park, if you are not setting the parking brake each time, the car will roll until the transmission locks in place, a few inches at most.
