It looks like a small piece of the smaller gear broke off then got in the way of the big gear causing explosive disintegration. I'm amazed you could drive at all once it broke. I'm guessing the back differential was just slipping and grinding while the front was actually pushing the car. What a story I loved the "if you don't laugh you'll have to cry" attitude with the "inspection hole" comment.

Thats an awesome write up mate.
It just so happens that this morning when I was pulling my boat out of the river I had the same problem happened to me. A loud bang from the rear and no drive I've had a look underneath and both shafts are loose inthe diff centre.. the centre seems to completely snapped insideand is loose in the housing. Everyone else seems to be closed over the holiday season and I really need to get the car back on the road does anyone know wegher an e53 30d diff is the same??? I kmow the later x drive models are different with the electronic rear diff... but maybe early ones are the same lol? I guess the torque from a tuned diesel really does i't lol

Look up he part number for an E70; look up the part number for an E53. If they are the same, they are interchangeable. I would be A LOT of money you cannot (successfully) use a part from an E53 Last edited by ard; 12-26-2017 at 03:41 PM. |

Doesn't appear that it will but I'm confused about which is your car and which is the potential donor.
Using my 2008 X5 4.8i as an exapamle. I go to RealOEM.com drill down to the differential, click on the part number and it shows which other cars used that same part number: RealOEM.com - Part Search Mine shows: 33107552530 (10/02/2006 — 04/15/2010) So for mine ONLY X5's between 10/2006 and 04/2010 On that same page, in the upper right that "I=3.91" is the ratio. Used parts places are going to ask you that. Good luck! |
