2011 35i Garage Door (Liftmaster) Issues

Hi everyone,
I’m new to posting here but have been lurking for a while. I hope you don’t mind a post on a well-covered subject, but I haven’t found an answer — I’ve read most all of the resources on this topic available, and almost they all focus on issues with the “Learn” button on the garage door opener and the procedure overall.

However, my problem is that I can’t get past the first part of the procedure — getting the LED on the mirror to flash rapidly in response to the remote transmitter next to it. I’ve followed the steps - buttons 1 and 3 held down for 20 seconds until it flashes rapidly to erase the old programming — got that — then hold the original remote next to the mirror and push button on mirror and transmitter at the same time — no dice. It just keeps blinking slowly and never changes.

My Liftmaster is from 2016 so it’s using rolling codes, but I can’t even get that far. For what it’s worth, the remote has a new battery, worked perfectly to program my wife’s Honda, AND worked to program my 2006 e90. I also tried the spare remote (same model).

Also, my e70 is a 2011 with build date of late May 2010, if that matters.

So.... is there something else should I try? Another type of remote? Dancing in the driveway? I’m open to suggestions.

Like I said, I can’t even get the LED on the mirror flash rapidly to acknowledge the remote. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide...
-Jim

Not that this really helps you, but I have a 2012 35d and a liftmaster that is using rolling codes. And doing exactly what you did, mine works perfectly. I held the remote button like 3"-4" away and it picked it up almost immediately. Then I did the learn button process and that worked too. So no help on your problem, but just letting you know it can work...

It’s not totally unhelpful. Do you know by chance what the model number of the remote transmitter was/is? I’m wondering if it’s something about my transmitters, rather than the overall system. Mine are 893LM and 893MAX (on the back of the transmitter).

Thanks either way...
-Jim

Yeah, mine is the 371LM which is a single button. A quick google search of your remote looks like there are a bunch of posts of the 8XX series remotes that won't work. Looks like it comes down to a licensing issue and companies not wanting to pay royalties to Johnson Controls for the technology.

Interesting. It makes me wonder if I just use a different remote, programmed for my opener, if will it work with the BMW Homelink.

It seems strange that my 2006 BMW, 2013 Subaru, and 2018 Honda all worked fine with the same remote and same opener.

May be a stupid question, but after you put in a new battery into the remote, did you reset the remote by pushing the button on the back, the button on the front you want to use, and then re-link it to the garage door opener using the learn button? Only asking because sometimes I know taking out battery and putting new one in, they dump their settings. Then go thru the process of linking the remote to the car?

It’s a totally reasonable question. But yes, after the battery replacement, I reprogrammed the remote and made sure it works on its own to open and close the garage door.

Seems to be a huge number of help pages, prcedures and videos here:

HomeLink

Also, I seem to recall some systems needing a 'bridge' or something....

Ive had to modify the programming for specific remotes (basically remotes that only transmit 'once per press'...gate operators...you need to press at about 1Hz to get it to repeat. Dont think this is your issue.)

Don't know if this will help you or not but I've noticed with my Liftmaster I had to press the button on the remote two or three times to get the homelink in the mirror to pick it up, once it did it was fine. Problem for me seemed to be that the remote would transmit for a few seconds and stop, so releasing and pressing again a couple more times gave homelink enough time to sync up. Not a problem since.

Hope this helps

I’ll give this a try. Can’t hurt at this point!

Yeah, that’s the part that doesn’t work for me. No fast blinking, no pairing to the remote.
