3.0 broken aluminum head bolt
My wife’s E70 3.0 was leaking oil. I started looking around and found a bolt head had snapped off next to the oil filter housing. I did some research and found that this bolt is actually a head bolt and breaking is common on earlier e90’s but I do not see it happening on any X5’s (hers is a 2010). Here is an article on pelican discussing the problem; https://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tec...t_Testing.htm# Have any of you heard of this happening on an X5? I have removed the intake manifold and extracted the remainder of the bolt. My next step is to remove the valve cover and make sure that the three aluminum bolts used internally are still there. We are not the original owners of the vehicle but have had it for last year or so. I would love to get feed back on this. Should I be worried? Is there anything else I am missing? Thanks Last edited by Sundevil; 04-30-2018 at 01:42 PM. |

Thanks for the post, I checked mine last night after getting home from work. Bolt head is still there. 2009 X5 3.0 with 43,000 miles.

I had 2 broken head bolts (they should be called timing chain cover bolts) on my early 05/05 build E90 N52. The outside one was easy. I just loosened the manifold bolts and pulled the front of the intake back a couple of inches. The PCV hoses and other things can stay connected which makes it much easier. The bolt shaft then spun out with a pick.
Keep in mind that interior bolts breaking is rare but if you are due for a VC gasket then go ahead and inspect. The bolt head was still sitting on the top of the bolt but it just spun when I touched it. I stuffed rags into the timing chain area to keep it from falling into the lower part of the motor. I was then able to remove the head with medical clamps. To replace the interior bolts the timing chain sprockets need to come off. That requires special tools to hold down the cam shafts. This happened to my E90, at least three broken aluminum bolts. I replaced the VCG myself and took me days. Hasn't happened on my X5 yet. The use of aluminum bolts is due to the material of the engine, magnesium block I think. Make sure to follow the torque specs to avoid over-tighten them.
