We are running the Conti DWS' on the wife's diesel in factory sizes and highly recommend them. Not noisy and good in all conditions we experience in south texas.

another vote for the Continental DWS 06. Love these tires and the 560 treadwear!

One comment....

People will obsess over tires, models, reviews, 'how many miles you get?', blah blah...yet slap them on their car year in and year out and never consider their alignment.

Indeed, even if they do get "an alignment" they think it is a binary thing they get: "car is aligned" or "car is not aligned".

They think that as long as the numbers are "somewhere in that big huge BMW range" the car is aligned. And all is good.

Worse, they - AND MOST BMW MECHANICS AND ALIGNMENT TECHS- think that "if I hit the target spec, THAT is perfect. This is horribly wrong for 99% of drivers.

You should set the alignment as follows:
Toe: toe in to the minimum of the BMW spec; like 0.01-0.02 per wheel, all 4
Camber: Mid spec, balanced side to side
Caster: Mid spec (if adjustable), balanced side to side

You can get 40k+ miles from tires with this alignment, or you can go with the nominal 'middle' that BMW often hits and get 20-25k; or, if you are unlucky and they give you toe at 0.16, and cambers mismatched, you can see 8k.

This concept has been validated by many. Here is a thread to read through...Wow, was my alignment off ! - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

Buy whatever tires you want...but spend $99 and get a great alignment to these specs- dont listen to the shop- and you will be a happy camper 40k from now!

Haven't clicked the thread link yet, and this may be a stupid question but I'm gonna ask anyway ... does that 40k apply to run flats as well?

I was using slight hyperbole, tossing out a number that is NOT a 'claim'

The key take away is that no matter what miles you SHOULD get from any given tire- for where you live, howyou drive, etc,etc- if you optimize the alignment you WILL get more than a middle of the road, BMW BS alignment.

But, as a matter of fact, I get about 40k on my michelin latitude RFTs. Go figure.

Bridgestone Dueler RFTs (OEMs). I've gotten about 40K on 2 different sets.

To add more info - I have about 50,000 miles on this set and have gotten over 60,000 miles on other sets of Toyos (I believe one set even had 75,000 miles one them!). It's strictly the noise that comes earlier around 25,000, and they become choppy around 30,000+.

We have also run Toyos in the stock size. Definitely noisy set of tires. They are currently still on our old e53 X5 (was bought by a family friend) and have at least 20,000 miles on them with tread depth still looking good >75%. I'd expect them to get 40,000 miles at least before replacement.

Our Conti DWS on the e70 only have 10,000 miles on them but are wearing well and definitely has a quieter ride. We certainly like them more than the Toyos, I think the model was the Proxes ST2.

As ard says, this is all anecdotal, but just adding a data point with our experience of the two tires.

I just purchased 2 Lexani LX Thirty for the front, from eBay $205 shipped. Can't really go wrong with this price...

These are just 'summer' tires for me and mostly just city driving. Trying to slowly pull away from run flats. Will order the rears next month.

I'd be interested to see your alignment.... I will bet you got lucky and serendipitously it was set up with minimum toe.

I am an unabashed Michelin fanboi...Latitides, LTX, PS2, PSS... these are my current tires on 5 cars. They just run down to 0mm, well behaved.

Here in California it doesnt rain- at all- between June and October-ish. So I can run slicks if I want. Helps when the timing works out that a set of tires hits 3,4mm as the rains stop!
