Last fuel on US soil and shout-outs
I still need to do the map update with a European map and hopefully I can set the radio to the European FM frequency system. Anyone who has experience with either please pitch in?! Couple of shout outs. Bob Linville of GlobusT Shipping was his usual courteous self and put up with all my delays and route changes. This is my second time with Bob going to R'dam. Glad to provide his phone nr and email on request. The folks at S2 Dynamics in Rockville did the suspension alignment. Patrick and his team are used to setting up track cars and had no issue with my request for specific settings to be targeted. Their manner is courteous, helpful and knowledgeable. Highly recommend them to anyone in the greater DC area who needs an alignment for their E70!! Again thanks to those who helped with comments while I prepped the car, in particular those who helped with the coding!

Very, very cool. I know how I excited I get the night before I set out on one of my cross-country trips. I can only imagine the excitement of preparing and executing a trip to another continent all-together.
I'm only guessing, but you might have to replace the radio module to get the European radio frequency spacing. I'd guess the map could be purchased and installed. It sort of depends on what an "update" consists of. An operating system with current maps or just edits to existing maps in the system. Might have to start at square one.

Safe travels. Gonna see some pics with funny names? Spent a ton of time near Rdam. Had an EU office there. Good times.
Pretty sure the frequency thing is a coding feature. Seem to recall that. Strong opinion is that it is NOT a hardware change. BMW switches cars after EU delivery all the time. and just 'sexes' the car after assembly. A search here should give you the answer. happy trails. |

Once it is in Rotterdam, I am on home soil. :-) I interned in Rotterdam port when I was about 19 or 20..... and did my masters there a decade and a half later while living in Amsterdam.
I will zip up north to what used to be my parent's house and install a Euro hitch. I still have a bunch of tools there left by my father. I have one more mountain bike there that comes with me to Portugal as well. Timing for the X5's arrival is uncertain and depending on the arrival date I will either drive to Portugal or to Florence (It) where my daughter is registered for an art course early July. I expect there to be plenty of pics with "funny" names. Before the arrival I will have time to research the coding issues and maps (from previous experience with Audis and M-Bs maps are easy to install but this is a beamer....nothing is simple). I am getting CELs again on warm starts and I think my DPF will finally need to be cleaned. In Germany Bosch Service does this and I will have to have a look if I can get it done in the Netherlands. I want to buy another OBD cable and software. Does anyone know under what name the Romanian Ebay seller is trading? I will post pics as we go. :-)

Radio frequency change and map update
Arrived in Portugal and now researching the frequency and map issues. On changing the FM frequency spacing I found the following items (which I believe must be in the CAPPL module, as on the 2009 E70 the idrive is a CCC unit).
RADIO_COUNTRY - ece (werte00) ANZEIGE_FREQ - nicht_aktiv (werte00) and FM_DEEMPHASIS=>50us Tried to find the CAPPL coding options online but can't find a good list. If anyone would be willing to email me a txt file with their CAPPL trace file I would be grateful. Regarding the maps, after a lot of searching last night, it seems that on the 2009 CCC unit maps are DVD based. I should only need the disks for the EU maps to make this work. There are a lot of cases with EU based (US spec) cars going stateside but few going the other way and even those, the info is incomplete and often refers to later idrive systems which use a VIN based access code. I am not sure and I have neither the car at my disposal nor do I have the software on my laptop, so I guess correcting that is my first task :-) If anyone has thoughts or comments on my deductions above please let me know?

Update
Been a while since I last updated this story. After a lot of fiddling with the software on my laptop, I got INPA to work as well as NCSExpert. I made quite a few more changes to the car's coding options, one important one is displaying the speed in the central display in KPH. It makes it much easier to zip around town and not exceed the speed limits too badly. I still can't find coding to get the cruise control to show kph....but it works fine as is, it is just odd that seems to be no fix for this. I also replaced the tail lights with euro ones to have the yellow indicators.
Having INPA operational is great as I could now read the engine fault codes (Needed some lines of programing in Inpa to make the n57 35d accessible...my son sent me the files needed from my desktop in the USA, nothing is easy!). The error with the pre-DPF pressure is gone now that the DPF has been cleaned but (as they indicated in the shop that did the DPF) there was a persistent error on the glow plug module. I finally replaced it last weekend and so at last, no more check-engine-light!! I did the GP module swap without removing the intake manifold. To make it easier I bought a set of magnetic sockets and a long 1/4" extension. Before undoing the nuts on the GPM, I removed two bolts, one aft of the oil filter, holding a coolant pipe in place, the other one holds the dip-stick tube in place. This provided just enough space to move things about and pull the module. As in the Youtube video, disconnected the electrical connections before undoing the nuts holding the module in place. Ofcourse it is very messy, I sacrificed three sets of gloves which were soaked in black crud. Also, I finally got help from somebody on a coding forum with the right instructions to get the radio to work properly. CHOST LAENDERVARIANTE_GT ece AMBANDS_HST aktiv CTUNE RDS_AF_FUNKTION_CCC rds_ein_af_automatisch LAENDERVARIANTE_TUNER_ANT ece TP_FUNKTION_ANT tp REGIONALISIERUNG reg_ein CAPPL LAENDERVARIANTE_TUNER ece TP_FUNKTION tp TP aktiv TMC aktiv AMBANDS aktiv RDS_AF_FUNKTION_CCC rds_ein_af_automatisch CA_TMC aktiv TMC_REGIONAL_C nicht_aktiv I was on the road (well, traveling by air really) for almost a month during August/September, getting some work organized before stopping at the IAA in Frankfurt for a day (great event :-) Before I left my house in Portugal, I washed the X5 and put the cover on it. When I returned she fired up without any hesitation. I am still very happy that I shipped it despite all the challenges!

Good to hear this. I've never looked at the cruise control, but I was surprised that if you change the speed unit in the iDrive settings menu the odometers change also. This doesn't change the cruise control display?
I know you installed amber bulbs but did you happen to find amber LCI taillights?

Mine is not an LCI and so I did not look for amber LCI tails.
Changing the units to KM changes the odometer to km also. The cruise control however remains stubborn and shows miles..... I have given up for now trying to change the cruise control.
