Coolant leak from the rear of the engine

Hello. I am hoping I can get an advice on what could be the issue. I took my X5 on a road trip over the weekend (~1000 miles) .. this morning I noticed coolant on my garage floor towards the rear of the engine. could this be the infamous coolant transfer pipe?

thank you!

Your first sign of the transfer pipe leak will be in the front of the engine. From the weep hole behind and to the side of the water pump. In the back of the engine it would most likely be do to a valley pan leak or the “rear cover.” Both have been known to leak. More so after the engine has been sitting after driving. Sometimes a shop thinks the valley pan leak at the rear is the rear cover when it isn’t.

Thanks for your reply. no visible leaks at the front of the engine. when you say Valley pan do you mean just the cover or the infamous pipe that goes across? and is the "rear cover" you referred to item #5 here ?https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_3251

Thanks.

Yes. Rear cover is #5. Less likely than the valley pan leak. Valley pan is what covers the transfer pipe. If you go to the trouble of replacing the valley pan you might as well do the pipe too. I’ve done all this work. You just need to confirm where the leak is coming from.

oh man. I had the valley pan and all associated gaskets replaced ~4 years ago by an indy. I am guessing the "rear cover" is going to be a pain or a lot of money to replace.

Confirm it first. It could still be the valley pan if it has been 4 years. If it’s the rear cover the trans or engine has to come out.

They didn’t recommend the transfer pipe to be replaced at the same time?

Just adding to this. I believe you can verify if it is the rear cover leak or not fairly easily. If I remember correctly there are 3 caps on the bottom of the bell house where the transmission meets the engine. If you pop one off you would be able to stick a finger or something in there to see if the coolant is dripping from within. If it is in fact dripping from inside there then you would most likely be able to confirm or eliminate a leaking point.

"Where coolant hits the flloor" is not a reliable predictor of what has maybe failed...

Could be anything, IMO

From the work I’ve done, the coolant drops either front or back. For this engine I think it’s prob the rear cover or valley pan. Just my thoughts though. Unless it’s the coolant reservoir or HCV. Sending this from 3 hours into the future.
