2013 x5 issues found during oil change

So I took my 2013 x5 in today to get the oil changed and the brake fluid flushed. They did an inspection on it and of course found a lot of work that should be done. I find it interesting they didn’t find this 6000 miles ago when I was buying it from them and they changed the oil....

Wow really $2000? On my 740il this was a super quick cheap easy job. Is this really hard to do or something?

Next was $1300 for the value cover. Not just gaskets, they recommend the cover to be changed along with the gaskets. Price doesn’t seem that bad, but I would consider doing it myself. I did them on both of my e38 740il and it wasn’t that big of a job.

Next was oil filter housing gasket. $1000. It is leaking.

Are these jobs a pain? I would think I could do most myself if I can find a write up.

Anyone have any recommendations on these?

The OPG is an almighty pain because of the front drive/diff assembly. The front end is usually dropped with the engine supported. A buddy of mine has done a number of VC/VCG and the last one he did on his son's car took 2.5 hours and he did the OFHG while he was at it.
If you decide to do the VC & OFHG do not forget to prime the oil system.
Why did they not find all these? Because they only like to find "repairs" they will get paid for or the 150 point inspection was more like 5 points.
My CPO required 11 return visits to the $tealer and then I gave up and just used my own indy for the last of the repairs.
I would shop around the indy shops in your area and see if you can get a better price. There is also a DIY for the OPG that does not need the front end being dropped because you cut and patch the gasket. I'd be inclined to Permatex the gasket anyway.

Thanks I just searched the OPG and yeah it looks like a huge PITA. I don’t imagine the VCG would be that hard on this. Since the $1300 price was for a gasket and valve cover with labor...

Plenty of videos on YT. I picked up a steal on an OE VC for my '15. Lifetime warranty FCP Euro are also a good deal. I had both vehicles done one after the other so price was paramount.
My indy did the OFHG on the old '01 a couple of years ago for around $90 and I supplied the gasket. Local dealer wanted $600! If my back was up to it I would have done the OFHG & VC myself.

Get a PDF shop Manual via eBay; definitely combine YouTube with step by step manual.

These repairs are well within reach of a competent DIY Mechanic.

I have OFHG and opg on my to-do list on my e53.

I will be pulling the stiffening plate on wife's 2012 soon to assess and get ahead of any leaks.

I just bought plugs and air filters (seemingly original at 76,000i miles) and special injector cleaner and valve cleaner.

On N63 the injectors are the high anxiety concern as they must be matched and calibrated, when one fails, you will likely not be able to find a matching single unit and the set of 8 is $2000 just parts.

old post but I thought I would update it. I changed the front brakes and oil this weekend and was going to change the Oil filter housing gasket while I was working on it. I was stopped by the rear nut in the manifold. I can not get my hand back there to even get on the nut, and if I somehow managed to get it off, I know i have a 0% chance of getting it back on without losing the nut. Looks like I won't be able to do this one myself. Unless someone has some ideas for getting something on it and some type of socket that locks onto the nut. I don't think a magnet would hold it. If there is a way to make more room, or remove the wiring harness that is in the way. that might let me get at it. I hate to pay the $1000 to have it done, but at this time I don't see a way I can do it. Spent 3 hours trying to get that off, so I didn't have time to do the VCG this weekend. though now after reading some I think I should maybe replace the cover too and not just the gaskets.

I will be doing my OFHG soon and always take photos of my repair jobs and will report any tips I come up with for difficult parts.

Look for YouTube video that shows the full procedure you might just be missing a step. I'm guessing just something in the way that needs to be removed first like changing intake cam sensor you have to remove the vanos solenoid first.

thanks! I did watch multiple videos, most just say it is hard to get to. I have really big hands though and can't really get in there. I am looking at a socket that locks onto nuts though. I think I will buy one and see how well it locks on. I then can use my inspection cam and see if I can see the nut and get it off. if I can then the rest was easy. Of course I didn't even think of using my cam to see it when I was working on it before. I tend to forget about things I get to make my life easier....

K Tool International KTI20020 Multi Plus Close Qtr. Spline Socket 1/4" Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTZFQMN..._5DWUqhQdMDxps

Maybe just need a super low profile socket? This tool is invaluable!

Changing cam sensors on my brother's truck, without this tool you need to remove the engine mounts to get them off.
