Secondary DISA Replacement N52 11617560538

Hey all, need to replace our secondary DISA the "hard one" to reach under the intake. What is the consensus; does the intake manifold have to be removed to replace it (this is what BMW says to do).

How is everyone approaching this repair. Thanks.

DISA part 11617560538

Just had our N52 intake manifold off. I couldn't imagine doing it without doing so. You probably don't have to disconnect all the wiring and CCV system (if yours is like mine) and you should be able to do reach between the head/block and remove the inner DISA.

You getting a code for this? I hope it's not a common failure because I just did a whole rehab of mine (complete CCV setup, VCG, 4 front head bolts were broken) and did not replace that while in there...

There is no fault code present. I am getting this horrid noise:

I took it to our local BMW dealer and paid an hour labor ($189) diagnostic charge to determine the noise source. They said it is the secondary DISA. I was going to replace both as I suspected it was either a DISA or the vacuum pump based on similar YouTube videos of the noise. Didn't want to continue throwing money and parts at the problem.

Ah, yeah my N52 does not sound like that. I was wondering if you ever diag'd that sound. So it's the inside DISA? Pricey little bugger.

But yes, I can't imagine trying to reach between and behind the OFH/alternator area with the intake in place. Here is a good writeup that assisted. For an E60 (mine is an E61) but the process should be similar.
