N63 Engine Replacement Labels
It was a complex endeavor, specially without a lift, but I managed to do it with a Vevor 7,000 lbs. hydraulic lift and their 1,100 lbs. hydraulic table. Spent about 2 hours labeling almost every connector before taking the engine harness off! Ended up replacing the AC compressor and alternator along with front wheel bearings, one half axle, all engine coolant hoses and reservoirs (the intercooler one leaked from day one and it was a BMW part!). It took me around 2 and a half months working on weekends plus some extra time due to getting the a nasty flu in December. Anyway, if anyone knows the specific instructions for the engine labels please let me know. |

I think the fastest solution will be to find the same year and model engine.
Kudos on replacing. Our 2012 50i suffered rod bearing failure at 95 kmi but insurance totaled the car rather than replace the engine. N63 gen one is a high risk motor but we loved every minute of it. No Valvetronic is a bit like NA. Always happy to see a car brought back to life! Replaced the motor in both mine and wife's car last year! Upload pictures somebody should be able to locate where those labels go. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

Thanks! I bought the car with 101K and it had 169K at the time of engine replacement. It was burning a quart of oil every 400 to 600 miles! Surprisingly the intake valves were actually pretty clean but I couldn't say the same for the exhaust manifolds. One of them had about 50% blockage! I've put about 450 miles on it and will change oil at 1K. Still haven't pushed it after 5K RPM. I did install a colder thermostat but I still have to do the cooler oil thermostat.

The key improvements i suggest on N63 are ventilate the engine cover there are six obvious places to cut holes and get a thermal blanket for the turbo hot side. Keep the hot side hot and the cold side cold.
https://bmwrepairguide.com/virtual-l...3%20Engine.pdf Interesting write up on n63 Both mine and wife's engines would have likely survived if the oil pressure map was 10% higher or at the least, had 5-8 psi higher minimum. WOT to coasting the oil pressure on N55 will drop from 65 to 22 psi which is crazy! One blob of oil sludge that broke free from a recent oil change and instant spun bearing! In my case; failure in the CCV system led to boost pressure in crankcase, combined with rapid drop of oil pressure seized my engine in seconds. Wife's engine had the seal blow out from the OFHG, likely combined with a WOT burst to pass a "fossil driver" and coast causing drop to low 20s psi. I'm developing a very simple mechanism to boost oil psi. If the n63 controls pressure like n55, it would apply to that motor as well. I think the oil consumption issue on N63 is largely due to VSS did you do anything to reduce oil consumption in the replacement motor? –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

I just installed the new engine and even though I purchased all of what's needed to install the oil catch cans, I just needed to get my car my car back on the road (paying a rental for 5 weeks is not cheap!) as I was working on weekends and the wife had a surgery. I'll do it in the future along with the reduced temperature oil thermostat (already installed the lower temp coolant thermostat). Need to work on my E28 now as it's missing badly and need to have it ready for a trip to The Vintage in April in NC!

You did very well too get from 101 to 161 kmi. When we were searching for replacement to wife's 2012 50i, the MTBF seemed to be 120 kmi.
The thing that terrified me with that engine is injectors usually require changing all 8! Other than that, they do seem to be at risk for eventual rod bearing failure and as you are aware, engine out procedure to even preventive swap. Also periodic intake valve walnut blast is no fun on n63/s63. My next X5 will likely be B58 model. Almost the HP of N63 but up top typical maintenance. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone

![]() Bumped into this photo by crazy chance. I cut some ventilation for the N63. You could put some black mesh under so it would look a little nicer. The turbos top and center just cook the crap out of all the plastics under the cover. –awr– Using Tapatalk VIP on iPhone
