I am ready to order one... as long as I can order the third row of seats. My wife wants a third row because our family keeps getting bigger and we are a one car family... Its the XC90 or the new X5.. keeping the 03 4.6 is not an option....

I could very easily live with this vision of what the E70 X5 could be. Clean, understated elegance, very identifiable as BMW. Though the photoshoped pic I use as an avatar is more aggressive and muscular, these photoshops don't scare me away at all.

I do wish they would shelve the third row seat idea. with only 7 inches more in length, how can you possibly shoehorn in another row with any usable leg room? The second row in the current X5 only has 35+ inches of legroom and that with what some feel is minimal "boot" space. I read somewhere that the X5 will remain a 5 passenger (and that makes sense) and that the X7 will have capacity for 7 folk.

Just a thought. Does anyone on this board have proficiency with photoshop? It would be interesting to see someone take the testmule pictures and remove the body disguise....though I do not know if that is possible with photoshop. We could be among the first to have a very accurate depiction of what the E70 looks like if photoshoping the test mule were possible.

Actually, that is what Autobild has done in the pics I posted in this thread. Look closely at those pics and compare to the test mule pics you will notice that tail lights and hood shape are very close to test mule. See side-by-side-comparison pics on my page

The more they make the new X5 look like the X3, the happier I am to keep my 2003.

Great spy shot page LeMans X5!

It appears like pics of X5 in the first post of this thread is best interpretation of new E70 X5.

Here is exchange with an eyewitness at Zentrum
Quote:
Hmmm, I was at the Zentrum today and saw 3 different new X5s. All were very lightly camoflaged, basically a big black tape stripe down the side and around the tail. Wouldn't say it looked like an X3 on steroids but more of a rounded off X5. Had tailights that ran up the sides of the rear pillar like a Volvo wagon. Front fenders did not have a crease at the top of the wheel well but were more rounded and flared. No black trim around them either. Exhaust tips were ovals and exited somewhat like the current model except the rear valance is more "integrated". Front gille, bumper, valance area is less "busy" with fewer lines and a smoother look. All 3 were Ti silver and being driven by "suits". They accelerated quickly from the lot when they saw me breaking out the camera. Looked fairly complete and production ready. Not a very radical makeover IMHO, I like it.

Thats almost exactly what it looked like. Except the front and rear valances weren't black, they were body color (TiAg in this case) The picture shows a black trim around the fender lip. The ones I saw didn't have this or it may have been much thinner. Not at all like the fender trim on the current model. Also the taillights were different. They weren't any on the tailgate like in the website picture but ran up the rear pillar ala Volvo. Now wether there was a tailight under the tape stripe, I couldn't tell, but it appeared just to have tails up the pillars. Rest assured, the website picture is the best representation of what I saw yesterday. I may just have to get one now.
Also, when I asked why the factory tours were on hold till fall, the lady at the reception desk said they are tooling/testing a prototype. I said "new X5?" , she just gave a little smile and shrugged her shoulders.
