Is the "Active Steering" a MUST HAVE option?

When I test drove the X5 4.8 last weekend, it does not equip with the Active Steering option.

The sales person mentioned it's a "MUST HAVE" option because blah blah blah....

From the BMW website I understand the Active Steering works better only on the lower speed when you making turns and at higher speed its basically the same as the normal steering??

• Active Steering provides a variable, electronically controlled steering ratio and power assistance. At lower speeds, the steering is more direct. Yet at higher speeds, the steering provides greater directional stability. Active Steering is networked with DSC, achieving a reduction in DSC brake intervention.

Any "direct input" from the "Active Steering" owners are much appreciated.

I was told by 3 different salesman that it's too sensitive for normal driving, better used on a race track or if you live somewhere that you'd be doing a lot of tight cornering and get that race track feel. Otherwise, from what I was told, it takes a lot of getting used to and really isn't necessary, can be difficult to use/get used to in parking lots, curbs, etc.. because it turns so much more than you'd be used to with only slight movements of the wheel.

Would be good to hear from anyone who actually has it though. I'm only going on what I've heard...

I hate it and wouldn't order it. It's a very unnatural feel IMO.

I also think I saw a bad review somewhere in relation to other cars (a 5-series I think) prior to it being in the X5.

I have only driven a 545 with it, and only for a day or so. I found it unnatural. Having said that, if it was the only vehicle I drove I am sure that within a few days I would be accustomed to it. I would worry if I drove multiple vehicles and only one had it installed.

Is it necessary? Not in my opinion. I have read of some posters who love it, so it is likely one of those personal options that drivers like or don't like, not many will be neutral on it. I wouldn't spend the money myself.

I drove a 545 with it and I enjoyed it. It's a personal preference. Drive cars with and without it and decide for yourself. Don't believe anything the salesman tells you because most of them do not know the product as they should.

Total Crap! I have had many loaners with it and it blows. Don't waste your money you'll be sorry. IMO.

Why would you not want to know how your car is going to react when you move your wheel? With active steering it is always different.

I guess the Active Steering is an option that I can live without, besides my wife drives my car occasionally and I don't want her to get confused about the different steering angle at low speed.

Now if you want to add some features you cant live without...consider:

1. Comfort Access
2. Active Ventilated Seats (simply the best seat I have ever owned)
3. Tech Package

I already have Comfort Access and Tech package on my list. Now I will use the money from "Active" Steering to "Active" Ventilated Seats.
